Job overview

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will be a specialist and/or advanced practitioner in their clinical field and will work in clinical practice most of their working week.

They will provide specialist, accredited, clinical expertise in the mental health and behavioural support of adults with learning disabilities (and autism).

Their clinical focus will be within the Trust's Intensive Support Team (IST) delivering assessment and support to individuals when in crisis in the therapeutic milieus most conducive to their needs; (2) preventing inappropriate hospital admissions; and (3) supporting timely and effective hospital discharges.

Main duties of the job

Clinical practice hours will include direct and indirect clinical/therapeutic work with individuals and their support systems. They will function as a senior member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT), designing, supporting and/or delivering specialist assessments, formulations, interventions and recommendations of relevance to people with LD with acute and/or complex mental health and/or challenging behaviour needs.

Clinical responsibilities will include supporting colleagues to skilfully navigate the complex interface of values, rights, evidence, clinical guidelines, and legal/policy frameworks for people with LD, in accordance with the professional standards of their specialist/advanced practice.

This post is central to the delivery of clinically based support, education, training and development of the nursing team. Working in partnership with the Team Manager the post holder will develop and embed evidence based clinical nursing practice within the team through implementation and facilitation of clinically based education, training and skills development for nurses.

The CNS is a clinical specialist in learning disabilities and adult mental health and is knowledgeable and skilled in managing groups and teams. The CNS will have their own area of clinical skill/interest and will provide direct clinical work within the service.

The CNS would have oversight of operational issues for the team in the absence of team manger.

  1. To ensure that a therapeutic milieu is maintained by supporting the nursing team and the therapeutic structure
  2. To lead and/or support in aspects of complex casework and undertake specialist clinical work with individuals and/or their support systems.
  3. To take a lead role in ensuring that a high standard of multi-disciplinary care planning is in place and to be accountable for the nursing contribution to the process. To ensure that the nursing team provide accurate and high-quality patient records
  4. To maintain personal and professional development by providing direct clinical work to individuals and their families with appropriate evidence-based intervention e.g. solution focused therapy, CBT, providing groups and activities in line with the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) model
  5. To encourage and develop user and carer involvement
  6. To undertake any other duties which may reasonably be required by the Team Manager
  7. To take a lead on clinical matters and policy development relating to nursing practice.
  8. To provide professional leadership within the specific pathway, working with relevant. Team Managers and Service Managers for the planning and delivering of nursing practice and wider service delivery.
  9. To have good awareness of the Pathway and protocols and Trust policies and protocols within nursing and Nursing Strategy.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse or equivalent professional registration
  • Evidence of relevant post registration training and development.
Desirable criteria
  • Independent and supplementary Prescriber
  • Recognised training qualification.
  • Mentor and mentorship training or willingness to complete

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience in working with people with mental health needs.
  • Community and in-patient experience in mental health services.
  • Considerable experience in the assessment and management of clinical risk.
  • Experience in the planning and delivery of training and practice developments to staff.
  • Experience of effective collaborative working.
  • Evidence of ability to drive for results.
  • Evidence of experience in service evaluation and improvements.
  • Evidence of Interdisciplinary / multi-agency working experience
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical audits and research.
  • Experience of working in Liaison Psychiatry
