SEN Teacher for young adults at an Independent Special Needs school in Croydon London

We are a small, Independent school specialising in the support and education of young adults with learning disabilities including autism, ADHD and behavioural issues. We are currently expanding and require a dynamic, proactive and flexible teacher to join our team.

You will be supporting learners at our main school location near central London. You will be responsible for supporting the learners' educational needs whether academic or functional according to their individual support plan.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach small groups of pupils within, or outside the class
  • Prepare and deliver lessons and resources either in the classroom room or at a learner's home
  • Support other staff members to deliver high quality education consistently
  • Develop and adapt conventional teaching methods to meet the individual needs of learners
  • Collaborate with teaching assistants to define appropriate activities for the learners in relation to the curriculum
  • Assess young adults who have long or short-term learning difficulties and work with colleagues to identify individual pupils' special needs
  • Work with the Academic Manager and other senior members of the school to ensure that the requirements of the Equality Act (2010) are met in terms of reasonable adjustments and access arrangements
  • Liaise with other professionals, such as social workers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and educational psychologists
  • Work closely with parents and guardians to ensure the best care for their child
  • Organise learning outside the classroom in activities such as community visits, school outings or sporting events
  • Occasionally assist in severely disabled pupils' personal care/medical needs
  • Carry out administrative tasks, including updating and maintaining records of pupils' progress, observations and end of term reports
  • Attend statutory annual reviews or other related meetings, such as reviewing Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans
  • Manage behaviour of learners.
  • Provide occasional personal care if required (dependent on learners)
  • Ability to communicate using Makaton and PECS or demonstrate a willingness to learn

Mandatory requirements:

Experience in working with challenging behaviour students

QTS / PGCE qualification or equivalent

Up to date enhanced DBS

Desirable
  • Experience in Makaton Sign Language
  • Familiarity with the needs of autistic learners
  • Familiarity with TEACCH or other recognised teaching methods for autism
  • Care home experience
  • Able to drive
  • Flexibility and positive attitude
