Job overview

An opportunity has arisen to join the Department of Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

The service provides adult and paediatric outpatient and inpatient ENT activity at the major teaching hospital in Bristol, but also provides outreach clinics and inpatient support and advice across a range of other sites.

We are looking for an individual to join our large department to deal with an expanding workload. The Trust is the regional centre for otolaryngology, major head and neck surgery, skull base surgery, major ear surgery and hearing implantation.

The post is for one year initially, but may be extendable or may become a substantive position after one year.

The post would suit a doctor who has completed core surgical training (or equivalent) and has experience in ENT.

It is also anticipated that the successful candidate will contribute to the academic, research and teaching aspects of the posts as it is based within the major regional teaching hospital.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties include outpatient clinics, operating and emergency care. These activities occur in the University Hospitals Bristol precinct. The successful candidate will be expected to comply with all relevant Trust policies relating to administration of patient care.

b) Management and Leadership Responsibilities The management responsibility of the post-holder will be to the departmental clinical lead and the Divisional Clinical Chair who is responsible to the Chief Executive and Trust Board.

Person specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 2 years’ experience as an SHO, or equivalent, in ENT.
  • Experience as a registrar or equivalent in ENT.
  • Knowledge of basic science and the ability to apply this to clinical practice.
  • Knowledge of ENT to at least ST3 level and the ability to apply this in outpatients and theatre.
  • Experience of teaching medical students.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to perform ENT operative procedures without direct supervision.

Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Ability to provide clinical leadership for junior team members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.
  • Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
  • Ability to be a flexible team member.

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation.
  • Positive approach to evidence based practice.
  • Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise MRCS or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • DOHNS or other postgraduate qualification in ENT.
