Main duties of the job

This post would suit an individual who aims to pursue a career in Respiratory Medicine, and who wishes to develop an interest in teaching. The successful candidate will be involved in coordinating and providing the undergraduate clinical teaching programme (5 sessions per week per annual average) and will undertake 5 sessions of clinical duties and professional development.

The main clinical duties are to support a busy respiratory ward. Specialist clinics and training can be arranged according to career interests.

There may be opportunities to contribute to the on call rota for appropriate remuneration.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The department provides undergraduate teaching to medical students from Newcastle University across all stages of undergraduate education – from early clinical experience visits to ward based assistantships. Teaching is provided in a variety of clinical settings and the post holders will be expected to spend approximately five sessions per week teaching undergraduate medical students and will be trained as simulation training faculty members whilst in post.

The post holders will be expected to participate in student induction sessions and assessment sessions along with the Consultants. A variety of clinical sessions are provided within the job plan and it is expected that these will provide the post holders with valuable clinical experience as well as providing opportunities to deliver clinical teaching.

  • Significant NHS experience
  • Ability to prioritise workload & use initiative.
  • Meet the requirements of the GMC’s Good Medical Practice.
  • Valid GMC registration.
  • Experience in formal and informal teaching, especially undergraduate education.
  • Foundation year 2/ first year SHO or equivalent
  • Commitment to continuing educational and personal development.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary team.
  • MBBS or equivalent

Desirable

  • ALS / Alert course
  • MRCP part 1.
  • ST1+2 in core medical training or ACCS or equivalent
