Job overview

The post would suit someone who aims to pursue a career in Medicine / Elderly Medicine and who wishes to develop an interest in teaching whilst broadening their clinical and research experience. The successful candidate will also play a key role in the coordination, organization and delivery of the undergraduate clinical teaching program for approximately 2 sessions per week (annual average).

A close working relationship with the Undergraduate Medical Education Coordinator ensures a well-structured teaching experience for undergraduate medical trainees.

Ideally the person will have completed Foundation Training (or equivalent).The post is advertised for a doctor who would function at Tier 1 level, (SHO grade/Junior Clinical Teaching Fellow).

Main duties of the job

This 12-month post is based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead to support existing junior doctors on ward 25 (acute care of the elderly ward).

Duties include the day-to-day management of patients, including clerking, arranging investigations and dictating discharge summaries. Opportunities for attendance at Care of the Elderly sub-speciality outpatient clinics and work with the Acute Frailty team will also be available.

In addition to clinical duties the candidate will spend approximately two sessions per week teaching undergraduates medical students and will be trained as a simulation training faculty member whilst in post

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post includes the opportunity to undertake a formal qualification in Medical Education (Certificate or Diploma) during their employment within the Trust. Any formal qualification will be undertaken during the year of employment within the Trust and is subject to a financial cap (international applicants may not be eligible for this funding and if wishing to pursue a qualification, eligibility should be confirmed prior to application.

In addition to clinical duties the candidate will spend approximately two sessions per week teaching undergraduates medical students and will be trained as a simulation training faculty member whilst in post.

Gateshead Health NHS Trust works closely with Newcastle Medical School and plays a major role in undergraduate teaching. Students come to Gateshead for teaching in medicine in the 1st and 2nd years (Early Clinical and Community Experience), the 3rd year (Essentials of Clinical Practice and Medicine, Acute Care and Surgery), 4th year (Advanced Clinical Experience) and final year (Assistantships in Medicine, Surgery, Acute Care and Specialties).

The new undergraduate curriculum is now fully operational and has led to a large expansion in numbers of students in all five years of the course.

On call duties are negotiable but currently not part of this post.

If the candidate were to do on call this is based on a partial shift pattern with a 20-week template. Registrars are resident for the full 24 hours. There are two consultants on call per day providing a high level of training and supervision. The working week will be flexible and discussed at interview.
