An exciting opportunity is available for an innovative and progressive pharmacist who would like to lead and shape the future of Children’s Cancer Services across the Wessex region leading from the primary treatment centre based in Southampton.

Would you like to join us and be at the forefront of paediatric oncology pharmacy across a network? We are looking for someone who is passionate about delivering excellent standards of care to children within paediatric oncology.

We are looking for a consultant credentialled paediatric oncology pharmacist or a pharmacist with extensive experience working on their consultant portfolio with a view to submission within 24months of appointment. You should have experience across all 5 domains of the consultant framework.

You will lead and manage the clinical paediatric oncology pharmacy team as well as projects to support service development, quality or cost improvement and clinical excellence.

This is a fantastic opportunity for career progression with a specialist MDT, linking closely with medical, nursing and pharmacy staff both within Southampton Children’s Hospital as well as linked shared care units. You will be well supported by the wider pharmacy team including experienced paediatric pharmacists.

The large Pharmacy department employs nearly 400 staff and is highly respected within the Trust as a dynamic and forward-thinking department. Our clear vision - “Safer medicines, safer patients” is recognised by all staff who enjoy an environment in which they can flourish, grow and develop. We are constantly striving to improve, using technology and digital resources to provide world class medicine management activities.

Every member of pharmacy staff contributes to delivering our vision: this includes approximately 150 pharmacists, 120 pharmacy technicians, 90 support workers, 20 trainees and our supporting administrative staff. We review our progress and achievements annually, and highlight areas for focused development, but allow for responsiveness to changing national and local priorities.

We currently have 4 consultant pharmacists across a range of specialties who, along with many other staff, engage in national and international initiatives – helping to maintain the department’s excellent reputation.

What you will do:

Lead a high-quality professional paediatric oncology clinical pharmacy service, optimising patient access to medicines and improving overall patient experience.

Strategically lead, manage and co-ordinate the paediatric oncology clinical pharmacy team in the provision of a safe, effective and efficient service in accordance with local and national standards and strategy

Lead the development of e-prescribing for paediatric chemotherapy and supportive treatments.

Ensure that mandated data reporting is provided to the relevant authorities.

Contribute to improving health outcomes for patients using a holistic approach to care, ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines through provision of medicines-related aspects of patient care.

Provide expert advice to the Wessex Children’s Cancer Network and Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units in relation to medicines use, manufacture, procurement and supply.

Provide professional leadership to paediatric oncology pharmacy staff and manage the pharmacists, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards.

Provide expert advice to the paediatric palliative care service in relation to paediatric oncology.

Provide updates and advice to the Director of Pharmacy and wider pharmacy senior management team on paediatric oncology clinical pharmacy services, paediatric oncology clinical trials and experimental children’s cancer medicines providing assurance on compliance with relevant legislation and assuring appropriate funding streams are in place.

Use innovation to support effective patient outcomes, safety and experience aligned with relevant national agenda.

Lead, undertake, supervise and publish research in areas of paediatric oncology pharmacy practice.

Appropriately manage difficult and ambiguous problems, managing uncertainty, and to make decisions with limited information.

Applications are encouraged from both credentialled consultant pharmacists and aspiring consultant pharmacists expecting to gain RPS consultant accreditation in the next 1-2years. The post has been submitted for RPS approval at a consultant level.

Pharmacists yet to complete their credentialling would join at a band 8b (lead pharmacist) and move to a band 8c (consultant pharmacist) once credentialled.

  • Able to work with a multidisciplinary team to deliver and develop service needs as agreed with the clinical and management leads for the care group and operational deliver network?

This position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis (37.5 hours per week) but hours of work and shift patterns are open to discussion.

All pharmacy staff are required to contribute to extended hours, weekends & bank holidays as part of core hours. This includes general dispensary duties such as dispensing prescriptions and clinical pharmacy duties. This will include one late night every week (until 7pm) and one weekend shift every 6 weeks (9-5pm either Sat or Sun).
