We are seeking to appoint a motivated professional who is passionate about Health Protection to join our team. The local Health Protection team works across five local authority areas and sits within the wider Gwent Public Health team. As a Senior Public Health Practitioner, you will work in collaboration with a range of teams and services to deliver our objectives.

The post holder must be able to demonstrate their ability to work in partnership with other agencies and be able to manage conflicting perspectives. Key working relationships (internal and external) include fellow Health Protection and Public Health team members, other ABUHB departments (including Emergency Planning, Infection Prevention and Control), Public Health Wales, other Health Boards, Local Authorities and Social Care Providers.

There may be times when the post holder will be expected to work with, engage and/or communicate with members of the public.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will support the implementation and delivery of health protection programmes and responses using a range of interventions in line with key priorities. The Health Protection team have an exciting portfolio of proactive interventions embedded in their workplan and you will lead on work programmes including:

  • Sexual health (STI's, C-card scheme, cervical screening and HPV vaccine promotion)
  • National elimination programmes for blood borne viruses and tuberculosis
  • Vaccination equity
  • Screening of populations at risk

If successful you will be asked to focus on defined areas of work. However, as per the requirements of the service you may be required to work across a range of health protection issues.

You will support the acute response to public health incidents including:

  • Attending and supporting IMTs/OCTs and work as part of the Health Board response
  • Mobilising a response to public health incidents in collaboration with the Health Protection Clinical Response team
  • Manage the identification, prevention, control and response to infectious and non-infectious threats to the population of Gwent
  • Establishing situational awareness, surveillance, mobilising vaccinations, sampling and testing in partnership with relevant teams, supporting contact tracing if required, and engagement with stakeholders

Preparedness support and ensure the HB has robust plans and protocols in place for current and future threats to public health. This includes planning, facilitating and participating in exercises and training, in partnership with EPRR colleagues, to ensure relevant teams are familiar and trained to deliver incident plans.

The HB has recently endorsed a Public Health Incident Plan, which will require continued exercises, review and updating in response to evolving threats and issues.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Health related Masters or equivalent demonstrable level of knowledge and experience to Masters level
  • Registered Nurse on Sub-part 1 of NMC Register Or Registered with a UK statutory regulator (e.g., HCPC) Or Registered with UKPHR or be prepared to undertake on commencement of employment Or Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) Certificate of Registration
  • Evidence of continuing professional/personal development.
Desirable criteria
  • Clear understanding of how NHS Wales works and the function of the Emergency Planning within Welsh Government/Public Health Wale

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience in public health
  • Experience of regular multiagency/multi-disciplinary working
  • Experience of working with a number of programmes, including development, managing and evaluation of significant elements of work.
  • Experience of preparing reports for committees, both internal and externa
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in incident management
