Following retirement, NHS England (London) is seeking a Director of Improvement, Transformation & Partnerships to drive through the London Vision that will see London become the best city in the world to receive health and care services. The role will coordinate the delivery of “The London Mission” across the NHS, local government and the GLA.

As a jointly funded post we welcome applications from the NHS, local government and social care sectors.

The ambition is to transform NHS service access, experience and outcomes for all Londoners. This will mean the rapid development, implementation and spread of digital first services whilst ensuring that no Londoner gets left behind, reducing the gap of existing health inequalities.

You will need to develop strong working relationships across the NHS in London, ensuring there is senior clinical and managerial leadership in place. They will also be working in partnership with London Councils and the boroughs and the Greater London Authority, and closely with other regional bodies such as the Metropolitan Police Service.

This role will lead the NHS through the next strategic period and beyond and will play a key role in shaping our response to the government’s reform agenda.

We are designed to work as a multi-disciplinary team drawing together the combined talents of medicine, nursing, operational performance, improvement, strategy and a range of enabling functions under the leadership of a Regional Director.

Our role is complex – we are a convenor and co-ordinator, shining a spotlight on and sharing best practice. We oversee performance and have regulatory responsibilities.

We work with our partners and systems to address priority issues that require pan-London solutions and to support this we work together at neighbourhood, borough and regional levels.

The successful candidate will lead a large directorate, made up of teams focused on continually improving services and working in partnership across London.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.

NHS England hold a Sponsor Licence; this means that we may be able to sponsor you providing the Home Office requirements are met. To be eligible for sponsorship through the Skilled Worker route you’ll usually need to be paid the ‘standard’ salary rate of at least £38,700 per year, or the ‘going rate’ for your job, whichever is higher.

Job Overview

This role is all about leading a team that helps improve how care is provided to patients and communities in our region. We’re part of a larger network that works together to make sure everyone gets the best care possible. Our team focuses on making long-term plans, checking how well we’re doing, and helping local health systems do their best work.

What You’ll Do
  • As the Director of Improvement, Transformation, and Partnerships, you’ll be a key part of our regional leadership team. You’ll work closely with the Regional Director to build strong partnerships with local health providers and systems. Your goal is to help these systems become more independent and effective over time.
  • You’ll lead the Improvement, Transformation, and Partnerships team. Your team will develop solid plans, check performance, and drive continuous improvements in the quality of care and health outcomes. You’ll also step in to help when providers or systems are struggling.
  • You’ll also help shape national priorities and decide what kind of support local systems need. You’ll work closely with our corporate teams to do this. And when needed, you’ll step in for the Regional Director.

Team Management

You’ll manage the Improvement, Transformation, and Partnership Team. You’ll make sure that our national guidelines for performance, improvement, partnerships, and oversight are applied consistently and effectively throughout the region.This will involve:
  • Building strong relationships with other regional functions.
  • Supporting other Directors to ensure that our interventions are aligned and coordinated.
  • Building close working relationships with the regional Commissioning and Finance functions to ensure an aligned approach to performance, oversight, and intervention.
General Responsibilities
  • You’ll build strong relationships with senior colleagues across all NHSE functions. You’ll make sure that we’re all working together effectively and looking for ways to improve. You’ll also make sure that we have good governance in place, including identifying risks and taking action to mitigate them.
  • You’ll contribute to the development and delivery of NHSE’s joint corporate business plan and the strategic work programme of the NHS Executive Group. You’ll act as an ambassador for NHSE, representing our objectives and views to stakeholders.
  • You’ll be part of the regional on-call rota and may be required to step in for the Regional Director.
Key Relationships
  • You’ll work with a range of people both inside and outside the organisation, including System Leaders, provider Chief Executives, Councillors, the Department of Health and Social Care, and other national bodies such as the Care Quality Commission and Health Education England.
Staff Management
  • You’ll be responsible for managing a large team with a wide range of skills. You’ll have direct line management responsibilities and may also work with national colleagues in a matrix structure.
Budget Management
  • You’ll manage a significant budget, making sure we use our resources effectively across the health service.
