We are looking to recruit a Clinical Educator to lead on the planning, delivery and evaluation of palliative and end of life care education programmes across hospital sites.

The post holder will employ a variety of strategies to engage with the acute sector workforce to, upskill them in a bid to enhance the end-of-life experience of individuals and the people important to them.

Work collaboratively with Wigan & Leigh Hospice education and training team and external agencies to ensure practice-based learning enhances clinical expertise and effectiveness.

To support the long- and short-term strategic plans for the provision and development of education and training across service providers for all staff of different disciplines at all levels of the organisation and externally.
  • Act as an experienced information resource for other professionals, patients & those important to them.
  • Support and lead on the delivery and evaluation of education and training sessions provided to all eligible staff across WWL NHS FT.
  • Work flexibly according to the needs of the service, ensuring accessibility to education for health and social staff working on different shift patterns in the hospital.
  • To deliver evidence-based education to a variety of learners, utilising diverse teaching methods which cater for various learning styles.
  • Act as a role model to other Health and Social Care Professionals, clarifying and evaluating objectives for the learning experience.
  • Maintain records of all educational activity
  • Participate in hospital and hospice related research projects and audit activity.
  • Support the facilitation of larger scale educational events such as conferences as necessary.

Key results from the job holder
  • The Palliative Care Clinical educator will work with a variety of staff in clinical practice to promote the development of new essential skills and knowledge that will enable them to provide high quality Palliative & End of Life Care for our patients. In accordance with local, regionally and national guidelines and initiatives.
  • To assist the team to continuously develop an education service which meets the needs of the specialist and generic workforce
  • Development of a variety of educational strategies to meet the needs of the organisation in delivery of personalised care for patients in the last year of life.
  • To promote and develop a learning environment within WWL NHS FT.
Clinical
  • Deliver internal and external training to a variety of specialist and generic staff.
  • Devise, implement and evaluate formal and informal training programmes that delivers evidence-based practice.
  • Act as an experienced positive role model and demonstrate clinical skills in the practice of delivering holistic care
  • Proactively identify ongoing educational needs to meet Trust objectives
  • Work in partnership with other education providers within Wigan borough and Greater Manchester.
  • Negotiate appropriate referral to other palliative care services as necessary.
Leadership
  • Chair/participate in relevant strategic forums relating to the provision of palliative and end of life care education across the hospital site
  • Act as a positive role model always and in the absence of the service lead, ensure that the team functions to the highest standards as set by the manager
  • Accept accountability for own actions and areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make confident decisions in the absence of the service lead.
  • Involve others in decision making and empower them to take responsibility where appropriate.
  • Utilise appropriate strategies for conflict resolution in the learning environment, to enable the best experience.
  • To foster and maintain effective communication with all teams internally and those externally that are involved in the delivery of care across the health and social care economy.
  • Using reflective practice, contribute to the development of critical thinking and decision making within the team and with other professionals.
Management
  • To lead in the day-to-day organisation of the hospital palliative and end of life care education programme
  • Act as a supportive member of the Hospital palliative care team and liaise with the Hospice practice development team, to ensure a seamless provision of educational intervention across the locality.
  • Ensure education is high on the agenda through strategic engagement with commissioners and other key stakeholders.
  • Support other team members, including volunteers with the planning and co-ordination of the hospital and hospice learning hubs.
  • Proactively seek out opportunities to develop Palliative & End of Life Care training and education.
  • To implement and monitor all relevant hospital policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing to a variety of stakeholders.
Planning and Organisational Duties
  • To lead in the day-to-day organisation of the hospital palliative and end of life care education programme.
  • Act as a supportive member of the Hospital palliative care team and liaise with the Hospice practice development team, to ensure a seamless provision of educational intervention across the locality.
  • Ensure education is high on the agenda through strategic engagement with commissioners and other key stakeholders
  • Support other team members, including volunteers with the planning and co-ordination of the hospital and hospice learning hubs.
  • At all times be aware of the need to provide a value for money service, to be mindful of the cost of supplies and how we use them.
Communications and Key Working Relationships
  • To foster and maintain effective communication with all teams internally and those externally that are involved in the delivery of care across the health and social care economy.
  • Liaise with hospital doctors, GPs and other clinicians, where appropriate, with the aim of enhancing the care of patients/residents across diverse care settings
  • Support other team members, including volunteers with the planning and co-ordination of the hospital and hospice learning hubs.
  • To support the team manager in identifying and informing the executive teams of service development needs.
  • To participate in service development activities such as business case submissions and reporting outcomes to commissioners.
  • Attendance at relevant meetings, where palliative and end of life care education outcomes require sharing with key stakeholders.
Responsibility for Finance
  • At all times be aware of the need to provide a value for money service, to be mindful of the cost of supplies and how we use them.
  • To manage the resources available and deliver a high-quality cost-effective service.
  • To ensure efficient and effective use of materials resources/ supplies within the team.
  • To identify any problems with resource use / availability and make recommendations for corrective action which is consistent with team objectives and organisational policies.
Responsibility for Human Resource
  • Participate in the Trust appraisal and personal development plan process by identifying your own development needs and agreeing development plans for these needs with line manager.
  • Responsible for compliance with mandatory training, professional updates and participates in staff support. Identify, report and address poor performance issues.
  • Take responsibility for own professional development, identifying training and development needs to line manager.
  • Complete all necessary components of the revalidation process.
Responsibility for Health & Safety
  • Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
Responsibility for Teaching
  • To assist the team to continuously develop an education service which meets the needs of the specialist and generic workforce within the locality and reflects the needs of individuals living with life limiting illness, including those disadvantaged/ hard to reach groups.
  • Developing programmes of study that are evidence based.
  • Implement and evaluate programmes of education to meet identified need
  • Develop, maintain, and share own knowledge and skills in palliative and end of life care, ensuring that practice and teaching is evidence based.
  • Provide palliative and end of life care education on a range of clinical and ethical issues across professional disciplines including undergraduate and postgraduate health care professionals, along with other organisational employees.
  • Provide teaching and supervision of all levels of staff in clinical areas to promote confidence in care giving and the acquisition of new knowledge and skills in relation Palliative & End of Life Care.
  • Contributes to relevant professional forums associated with the educational role.
  • To support the team manager, within resource constraints, towards full implementation of the Supportive and Palliative Care NICE guidance, End of Life Care Strategy, GM Commitments and National Ambitions recommendations and Quality Markers.
