Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Practitioner Psychologist (Clinical or Counselling) to lead the Cardiff and Vale UHB, Child Health Psychology Service based in the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales. The post holder will have responsibility for leading, supervising and line managing a compassionate, dedicated team of psychologists, a ward counsellor and administrative staff working with children and young people with chronic health conditions in a medical setting.
We support collegial working and actively encourage a culture where open dialogue about improving inclusion, promoting diversity and valuing the well-being of both service users and staff is welcomed and celebrated. You must hold a Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology or its equivalent and be an HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist (Clinical or Counselling) with a clear track record of working with children and young people and/or a commitment to working children and adults in a medical setting.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will join a dynamic team of Lead Consultant Clinical- and Neuro-Psychologists in working with, and advising the Head of Children, Young People and Family Psychology and Psychological Interventions, which delivers both local, regional and specialised psychological services to babies, children, young people and families.The Child Health Psychology Service currently has highly specialist psychological expertise embedded into paediatric services including: Endocrinology, Renal, Gastroenterology, Diabetes, Rheumatology, Neurorehabilitation, Neurology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Cardiology, Metabolic Medicine, General Paediatrics, Oncology and Cystic Fibrosis.
There are also upcoming developments for psychological expertise in Persistent Pain and Paediatric Neuropsychology. They will continue to build on the positive stakeholder relationships across, Cardiff and Vale UHB, Charities, the Welsh Joint Commissioning Committee, the NHS Executive and our partners in other UHBs across Wales; and be responsible for the strategic planning, governance, safety, leadership, development and delivery of psychology services for babies, children and young people with chronic health conditions.

Qualifications/Knowledge
Essential criteria- Post-graduate Doctoral qualification in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent for those trained prior to 1996 or for those trained overseas), as accredited by the BPS
- Registered with the HCPC as a Clinical or Counselling Practitioner Psychologist
- Clinical supervision training for supervising Doctoral trainees
- Management and leadership training
- Advanced specialist knowledge of clinical or counselling psychology theory and practice
- Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology
- Attendance at several taught post-graduate courses and supervised self-directed study in specialist field
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and its implications
- Evidence of CPD as recommended by the BPS and HCPC
- Significant experience in both the clinical supervision and/or line management of qualified clinical staff, including management of governance and performance
- Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice
- Advanced level experience and formal accreditation in one or more psychological therapies e.g. CBT, DBT, IPT, EMDR
- Recognised qualification in supervision.
- Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of highly specialised psychological therapies and assessment methodologies for children and young people
- Evidence of publications in peer reviewed (academic or professional) journals/books or presentation at conferences
Experience
Essential criteria- Substantial experience as a qualified senior clinical/counselling psychologist
- Experience as a senior level clinical/counselling psychologist in a medical setting
- Experience of working with children and/or adults with chronic health conditions
- Experience of setting up and developing services
- Experience of highly specialised psychological assessment and treatment
- Extensive experience of working with client groups across an increasing range of clinical severity
- Extensive experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care
- Extensive experience of providing teaching, training to qualified and non-qualified staff
- Extensive experience of clinical supervision to qualified and non-qualified psychologists and other professionals
- Experience of the application of clinical/counselling psychology with a range of culturally diverse and/or marginalised groups (e.g. LBGTQIA+, racially ethnically minoritized or neurodiverse etc)
- Experience of representing and leading psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
- Experience of professional management of qualified clinical psychologists and other staff.
- Evidence of liaising with key stakeholders (e.g. commissioners, third sector etc)
- Welsh-language learner or speaker
- Evidence of a programme of Continuing Professional Development
