Applications are invited from enthusiastic, highly motivated and experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists, to take technical management responsibility of the Cellular Pathology Laboratories, NCA NHS Trust. Along with the other Technical managers in post.

You will be expected to work across both sites of Cellular Pathology.

The successful candidate will be qualified to MSc (FIBMS) or equivalent in Cellular Pathology. You will have an in-depth knowledge of Cellular Pathology practice at Advanced BMS grade. You will have the ability to manage the laboratory on a day to day basis supported by Advanced BMS, Specialist, Biomedical Scientist and Support staff and have a good working knowledge of the requirements needed to ensure compliance with UKAS ISO 15189.

You will be committed to Patient Safety, improving and maintaining quality.

You will be joining the cellular pathology service at an exciting time as we have successfully bid for NHSE automation funding. You will be part of the team introducing the Sakura SMART automation comprising of the Tissue Tek Xpress x120 and the Tissue Tek AutoTec a120.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as a Departmental Technical Manager in the Pathology discipline across hospital sites and will be responsible for the day-to-day technical management of the service. The post holder may be required to participate in the technical activities of the department when required.

Will be responsible for the day-to-day provision of a high quality, cost effective clinical service and will develop the service in line with departmental objectives. They will be responsible for the work of the area, and supervision and training of all staff.

They will be responsible for ensuring that maintenance is carried out on analysers and equipment and will take action to resolve problems. They will also be required to work autonomously.

They will advise the Service Manager on and participate in the evaluation, selection, implementation and development of new technology including analysers, IT systems diagnostic testing procedures.

They will support the Service Manager in the management of the department, by utilising resources and deploying the departmental budget in the most cost effective manner and identifying trends in expenditure at an early stage to facilitate effective remedial action.

They will be responsible for the management of all technical staff within the service area. along with the other Technical Managers.

They will deputise for the Service Manager as required.

The post requires advanced and specialist knowledge.

Essential criteria
  • MSc or equivalent in Cellular pathology
Desirable criteria
  • Management Qualification
  • IBMS Certificate of expert practice
  • Leadership training

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of UKAS
  • Project implementation experience
  • Quality management experience
  • Significant knowledge & experience of training pathology staff
  • Significant experience at an Advanced Biomedical Scientist level.
Desirable criteria
  • Direct involvement in UKAS inspection
  • HR experience
  • Health and Safety knowledge
