Job overview
We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated Multi-Disciplinary Sarcoma Team. The successful candidate will become an integral member of a surgical team of three Orthopaedic Surgeons and three Plastic Surgeons treating Soft-Tissue and Bony Sarcomas.The successful candidate will join as a co-chair of the Sarcoma MDT, and have primary responsibility for bony sarcomas in both adult and paediatric patients. Additional roles include the treatment of complex and tertiary referral metastatic bone disease and the opportunity to engage in elective arthroplasty.
The candidate must have fellowship training in Orthopaedic Oncology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities- The successful candidate will join the existing Sarcoma Service ‘Surgeon of the week’ rota with responsibility for referral triage and chairing the weekly MDT meeting.
- The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their special interest and will be supported with peer mentoring, a close-knit and high functioning MDT, and dual consultant operating.
- The successful candidate will be required to treat benign and malignant bony and soft-tissue tumours in both adult patients at the Freeman Hospital, and paediatric patients at the Great North Children’s Hospital on the RVI site.
- The successful candidate will help to further develop the tertiary referral metastatic bone disease service in line with national BOAST guidelines.
- Play an active role in reviewing cancer targets and service specification.
- Participate in audit and clinical governance.
- Show a commitment to continuing professional development.
- Participate in annual appraisal (for revalidation) and in the annual job planning process.
- Work with and support all members of the clinical team.
Person specification
Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
Essential criteria- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC Registration.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
- FRCS (Orth) or equivalent
- Higher Degree.
- Special skills training in the specialty.
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria- Evidence of experience in the specialty.
- Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty.
- Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality.
- Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
- At least a 1 year Fellowship training (post CCT) in orthopaedic oncology.
Management and Administration Experience
Essential criteria- Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
- Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
- An understanding of Clinical Governance.
- Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
- Evidence of leadership / project management.
- Evidence of having implemented change.
- Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
Teaching
Essential criteria- Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
- Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
- Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
Research
Essential criteria- Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
- Research/critical review of literature.
- Publications in the last five years.
- Higher degree.
Audit
Essential criteria- Evidence of participation in audit.
- Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
- Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
