The University of Exeter is seeking a Business Development Manager- NIHR Exeter BRC Industry Engagement in the Health and Life Sciences Sector Team. This is a full-time post and is available immediately on a fixed-term contract basis until 31 March 2028.
Exeter Innovation (EI) is the professional team that supports and drives the University to engage with external stakeholders to deliver impactful and meaningful research that makes a difference in the real-world.
The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Exeter Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is the first of its kind in the South West Peninsula. As a partnership between the University and the Royal Devon University Hospital Foundation Trust, and in collaboration with NHS organisations, the NIHR Exeter BRC translates scientific discoveries into tangible benefits for patients.The NIHR Exeter BRC represents a £15MM investment from the NIHR and aims to help the partners run more clinical trials to get effective treatments into the clinic where they can benefit people and improve diagnoses.
The Business Development Manager – Health and Life Sciences NIHR Exeter BRC Industry Engagement role leads on the development of collaborations with industry, organisations and government partners. The post holder will support the delivery of the NIHR Exeter BRC industry strategy to engage with external organisations to drive income generation and spinout opportunities.They will work closely with the Business Engagement and Innovation (BE&I) NIHR BRC team including the Associate Director for BE&I, the Professors in Practice (PiPs) and Experts in Residence (XiRs).
The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities to deliver in the role:
Identify, develop and manage opportunities for income generation from internal and external sources towards the NIHR Exeter BRC target, limiting exposure to risk and maximizing benefits to the University.Develop detailed market research and insights using specialised databases, analysis of market trends, government strategy and by networking with external advisors, specialists, consultants, potential customers and competitors.
Develop sustainable partnerships with new and established partners with a view to these partners collaborating and/or funding projects with academics across the five current thematic areas of: Clinical mycology
DiabetesGenetics and genomics
Neurodegeneration
Rehabilitation
Provide the Exeter Innovation interface with the NIHR Exeter BRC. Work closely with the thematic leads to develop and deliver the BEI strategy and income targets embedded within the NIHR Exeter BRC strategic plan. In addition, identify and liaise with internal and external sector facing networks and organisations.
Advise and lead on the development of applications for economic development and knowledge exchange research; working with colleagues in Exeter Innovation and other Professional Services.Development of complex costings (and pricing where appropriate) of projects ranging from £10k - £3m using the systems and resources available in the Division.
Work with NIHR BRC academics to explore, identify and support commercialisation opportunities e.g. IP, licensing and spinouts
