Main duties of the job

Further experience will be gained in specialist MR, with imaging performed to cater for a wide variety of tertiary subspecialist MDTs.

The associated job-plan is provisionally split into 32 hours per week of direct clinical care including CT, MR and PET-CT scanning, with eight hours for research and administration. Sub-specialty interests are welcomed. Applicants should have a specific interest in specialist oncological imaging and clinical research.

There are on-going audit and research opportunities in the department and these would be actively encouraged.

Working for our organisation

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services.

We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

The medical establishment consists of 27 consultants, 4 clinical fellows in Oncology Imaging (including the post being advertised), 1 clinical fellow in Interventional Radiology and up to 5 Specialist Trainees in Clinical Radiology. The post holder will undertake lectures and tutorials to medical and non-medical staff in collaboration with and independent of colleagues.

Multi-disciplinary team meetings:

The consultant radiologists support the provision of around 25 separate MDT meetings. The post holder will be expected to participate in MDTs, with subspecialist interests accommodated.

Clinical Governance:

The post-holder will be expected to participate in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining and improving protocols, the consent process, discrepancy reporting, guidelines and clinical audit in conjunction with the other staff in the department.

In addition, opportunities will exist to get involved with national audit programmes of the relevant specialist societies.

Office and Secretarial:

The Trust will provide shared office accommodation with other radiology trainees and fellows. Secretarial support is shared between consultants and trainees / fellows.

Continuing Professional Development

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Role Planning

PROVISIONAL ACTIVITY TIMETABLE

Both part time and full-time applications will be considered. The post will be offered as 40 hours per week, divided into 32 hours of Direct Clinical Care and 8 hours of Supporting Activity; this will be reduced proportionally for part time applications.

An indicative timetable is described below (each session lasting 4 hours). Please note that an individualised timetable will be agreed with the clinical director Prof Jon Bell, and the fellow supervisor, Dr Sean Tenant. The exact timetable depends on the skills and desires of the successful candidate and upon the needs of the department.
