Also, you may have a lot of transferrable skills if you have supported adults within a care setting role such as Support Worker or Care Assistant. As a Teaching Assistant you will support pupils with Additional Learning Needs so experience supporting ALN would be desirable but not essential.
Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:
- Supporting the class teacher in managing classroom behaviour
- Supervising group activities e.g. reading, writing, numeracy
- Offering social and emotional support where needed
- Preparing the classroom ready for lessons and organising resources
- Encourage pupils to interact with the class and engage in activities
- Establish trusting relationships with pupils and interact with them according to individual needs and personalities
Ideal Teaching Assistant:
- Can build positive work relationships with both pupils and adults
- Capable of managing a group of pupils and managing behaviour
- Previous experience supporting children in a classroom or other setting
- The ability to demonstrate active listening skills and strong verbal communication skills
- Able to handle situations with empathy and show understanding
