The New Media Unit

The New Media Unit (NMU) is part of the Government Communication Service (GCS) and sits within the Cabinet Office. The NMU was established in November 2024 with the clear goal to reach, connect and rebuild trust with audiences in the most effective way possible.

Our aim is to provide the public with relevant, useful and authentic content when and where they want to receive it and communicate in an entirely new way.

The Team

Digital Creative and Production - the team covers creative direction and creation across all areas including graphic design, video, photography and in-app content creation. Production covers shoot planning and production, copywriting, publishing and working directly with creators / real life storytellers to produce content that performs natively in your daily social media feeds.

The Role

As a Senior Designer within the New Media Unit, you will play a key role in leading on the creation of engaging and visually impactful digital assets that communicate government policies through campaigns. This position is a fantastic opportunity for a talented senior designer to lead and develop skills within a fast-paced in-house team, producing high-quality visuals for social media, digital campaigns, and public announcements.

Working closely with a team of social first designers, videographers, creators and producers you will contribute to the development of audience-focused, visually engaging content that reaches millions across the UK.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Digital Content Creation: Design compelling and engaging graphics and visuals for government social media channels, websites, and digital campaigns. Produce content that aligns with campaign goals and resonates with target audiences, supporting the government’s communication priorities.
  • Campaign Asset Production: Assist in developing assets for major government campaigns, including graphics, infographics, and animations. Ensure consistency with campaign branding guidelines and collaborate with other team members to deliver a cohesive visual presence.
  • Support Campaign Branding: Work under the guidance of the Head of Content to implement visual identities for various campaigns, following established brand guidelines for typography, colours, and layout. Contribute ideas and suggestions to enhance brand cohesion across digital platforms.
  • Collaborate with the Multimedia Team: Partner with videographers, photographers, producers and strategists to produce multimedia content, ensuring visuals are consistent and aligned across all formats. Contribute to brainstorming sessions to find creative solutions that meet campaign objectives.
  • Audience-Focused Design: Create designs tailored to specific audience demographics, using insights from data and channel teams to develop social first visuals that are accessible and engaging. Help simplify complex policy messages into clear, relatable graphics that resonate with the general public.
  • Stay Updated on Design Trends: Keep abreast of current design trends, social media formats, and best practices. Bring fresh ideas to projects and help the team maintain a high standard of visual design that aligns with the latest industry practices.
  • Project Coordination: Support the Design and Branding Lead in managing multiple projects, keeping design files organised, meeting project deadlines, and ensuring efficient delivery of design assets.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work with internal stakeholders to gather design requirements, feedback, and approvals. Communicate design concepts clearly and ensure the final product meets stakeholder expectations.
  • Management: Proven line management experience, ability to support a collaborative ‘ok to fail’ environment. Proactive and positive attitude with a passion for creating the best possible creative to truly engage audiences.
