Applications are invited for a Full Time Consultant in Orthopaedics, with a Special Interest in Hip and Knee surgery, based at Northampton General Hospital.
We are looking for individuals that share our passion for excellence and want to join our team. It is essential that the successful applicant has completed fellowship training in Hip and knee Surgery including arthroplasty, and /or soft tissue surgery/ knee preservation surgery.This is whole-time 10 programmed activities position. The role will include elective and trauma operating, fracture clinics and elective clinics. There will be an ‘on-call’ requirement on a 1:12 basis. It is hoped that the applicant can be appointed as soon as is practicable.
It is essential that the applicant has passed the fellowship in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery or equivalent.
Main duties of the job
JOB PURPOSE
To provide a Consultant-led Hip and Knee Elective and Trauma on-call service for the population served.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The number of sessions to be devoted to the following activities will be dependent upon the department’s need and the post-holder’s requirements.- Participation in the Trauma On-call service - 1 in 12
- Operation lists, both Elective and Trauma
- Regular ward rounds
- Outpatient clinics, both Elective and Trauma
- A Specialist interest in Hip and Knee Surgery
- Be an active member of the weekly EMSSON meeting
- Presenting monthly mortality & morbidity statistics and participating in departmental teaching meetings
- Supervision and training middle/junior grade trainees
- Be prepared to participate in management duties within the department and the Trust

Frequent educational sessions run in the Centre for all levels of staff and it serves as an oasis from the clinical areas.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
CONTENTS OF JOB PLAN
The basic job plan is for 10 PA’s of which 8.5 PAs are clinical & 1.5 PAs are for basic/ core SPA duties.
The 8.5 Clinical PAs will consist of (subject to confirmation): 2 x elective theatre sessions – 2PAs (weekly all day theatre session
1 x Elective Orthopaedic clinic 1.5 PA (weekly)
1 x fracture clinic – 1 PA (weekly)
2 x Trauma theatre sessions 1 PA (all day trauma list on a fortnightly basis)
Ward Rounds 0.5PA
Clinical Administration – 1 PA (weekly)
On call duties – 1.5PA averaged per annum based on a 1:12 rota. This includes trauma commitments on a Saturday and Sunday trauma as well as not normally timetabled (Monday for example in the above timetable) The week on call replaces all normal timetabled work.This 1.5 PA includes 0.218 PA for unpredictable emergency work based on a 1:12 rota.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria- Full Registration with the GMC
- Possession of FRCS (Tr+Orth) or equivalent
- On specialist register for Trauma and Orthopaedics
- Post graduate degree - e.g. MD
- Sports medicine qualification - Diploma SEM for example
Experience
Essential criteria- Evidence of fellowship in Hip or Knee Surgery (soft tissue and/or arthroplasty)
- Wide range of experience in Hip and Knee Surgery
- Broad range of experience in general trauma provision
- Second Fellowship for example in Trauma, or second fellowship in knee surgery
Teaching and Clinical Governance
Essential criteria- Evidence of teaching at undergraduate/postgraduate level
- Evidence of audit participation
- Post-graduate qualification in Education
Management
Essential criteria- Evidence of management of a clinical service
- Evidence of a management qualification/ undertaken course in management
Research
Essential criteria- Evidence of research relevant to Trauma and Orthopaedics specifically hip/knee related
- Publications in Trauma and Orthopaedics
