Job overview

An exciting development opportunity has arisen for a new part time Band 6 Acute Oncology CNS within the Acute Oncology teams at Worthing and St Richard's Hospitals.

Acute Oncology CNSs offer specialist advice and support to the wider multi-disciplinary team in the management of the complications of treatment or disease for cancer patients. We are looking for a dynamic, proactive, highly motivated, and passionate individual to become part of our team caring for cancer patients during periods of acute presentation.

In addition to these attributes, we expect the individual to support the vision of our trust to deliver safe care compassionately.

Applicants must hold a current NMC registration and have demonstrable post registration experience of acute oncology care. The applicant must be able to demonstrate their leadership experience.

We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work across sites providing excellent care to our patients and supporting with the development of education and service processes.

To work collaboratively with the immunotherapy and acute oncology service alongside lead cancer nurse, matrons, and staff in the clinical areas to develop and deliver projects locally and Trust wide. The candidates should demonstrate excellent communication skills, be dynamic and strive for excellence in all aspects of the role.

They also need to demonstrate that they are supportive of the multidisciplinary team and are able to face daily challenges within service provision. The candidates would need to be adaptable and confidently advocate for their patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide specialist toxicity advice and support patients and medical teams managing cancer patients admitted with symptoms relating to cancer or treatment for cancer and other anti-cancer treatments.

To participate in the planning and support development of the future acute oncology services in accordance with the Trust's policies and procedures using the most effective use of resources and workforce.

Support the design and maintain acute oncology education programmes/training that facilitate acquisition of the necessary skills and knowledge on acute oncology and to support student placement within the cancer services team.

The post holder will work as part of the acute oncology service which is set up across the Trust and consult with our network colleagues supporting service development and responds to NHS changes. Attend the weekly multidisciplinary meetings to discuss and advocate for patients and for educational opportunities.

Person specification

Experience / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • First Degree in Nursing or appropriate oncology/immunotherapy course
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of working in an acute cancer setting
  • Sage & Thyme communication training or evidence of communication training
  • Evidence of telephone triage experience
Desirable criteria
  • SACT module or equivalent “in service training” course/SACT passport.
  • Cancer Nursing Pathway or equivalent.
  • Experience at teaching, and presentation skills
