Supporting the Paediatric dentistry team at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
This post is to join our Bank for ad-hoc hours to help fill gaps in the service as and when required. Please be aware that there is no guarantee of any set number of hours per week.
Main duties of the job- Chair side Dental Nursing
- Set up of dental clinics
- Maintain infection control standards
- Ensure patient flow within clinic
- Assist with dental assessments and treatment
- Agency Dental Nurse to assist in various clinics including Paediatric Dentistry, Maxillo-Facial, Orthodontics, Theatre and Sedation
- Assist with medical emergency should the need arise.
- Close down of clinical areas

Detailed job description and main responsibilities- Report any incidents that may put the safety of the child at risk to the senior Dental Nurse or Nurse in charge.
- Provide Chair side assistance to Clinicians during various procedures, including assisting in the management of sedated patients.
- To work within several multidisciplinary teams in various Dental and Surgical procedures.
- Maintain adequate levels of stock and specialist equipment.
- Preparation, maintenance and sterilization of specialist instruments/equipment and disposal of clinical waste following the appropriate protocol(s).
- Ensure high standards of infection control and decontamination processes are adhered to and appropriate protocols followed.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and have awareness of patient protection issues in accordance with Trust protocols and procedures.
- Maintenance of equipment and reporting of any defective equipment to Estates/Medical Engineering Departments or external contractors where required.
- Preparation of clinical records; including case notes, radiographs and study models.
- Maintain and organise model storage of orthodontic study models.
- Use of Qmatic and Lorenzo computer systems for all elements of the Outpatient processes including making patient appointments.
- Input onto departmental databases as required.
- Awareness of and adherence to the Data Protection Act.
- Ensure regular checks on essential equipment are made.
- General maintenance of the Dental unit(s).
- Ensure any clinical updates are fulfilled and recorded as appropriate.
- Assist with any departmental audits.
- Assist in the management/implementation of the Trust decontamination programme.
- Ensure Trust policies/procedures are followed and implemented as required.
- Awareness of and effective reporting of incidents in conjunction with Senior Dental Nurses and line manager.
- Any other duties as directed by the Outpatient Nurse Manager.

Qualifications
Essential criteria- National Examination Board Qualification/City & Guilds NVQ level 3 in Dental Nursing.
- Sedation qualified
General Experience
Essential criteria- Experience with children, adolescents and adults.
- Ability to recognise the need for immediate medical intervention.
- Experience of working with patients with complex needs.
Professional Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria- Have an understanding of patient and family centred care.
- Willingness to undertake a teaching role to support team members.
- Mentoring skills.
- Willingness to enhance management skills.
- Awareness of available current research.
Clinical experience
Essential criteria- Ability to understand and respond in an emergency.
- Willing to undertake training and role expansion.
- Previous orthodontic experience equivalent of at least 2 years full time.
- Previous experience in dental specialised area other than orthodontics.
- Minimum 2 years following training experience in Dental Nursing.
