A family based in Beijing seeks an experienced and adaptable Tutor to support their two young children, a boy (aged 3) and a girl (aged 1). The Tutor must be committed to fostering a quintessentially English, yet bilingual, culturally enriching learning environment that promotes early academic development.
The role requires providing educational support to the boy after school hours and on weekends, as well as creating a stimulating environment for the girl. The Tutor will also assist in planning educational aspects of family vacations, incorporating enriching activities into their travels.

The family travels frequently for work, and the Tutor will need to be flexible and comfortable adapting to a dynamic, travel-involved lifestyle. Two nannies assist with childcare responsibilities, and the Tutor must be able to collaborate effectively within this supportive environment.

Students

The boy, (3), currently attends an international nursery school, weekdays from 8am-5pm on. He is an active and bright child who is curious about the world. His parents want to ensure that he maintains a strong connection to British culture while also benefiting from exposure to multiple languages at home.

The girl, aged 1, is in an important stage of early development. She enjoys sensory play, music, and activities that involve imitating speech. Although the primary focus will be on her brother, she will join in shared activities, particularly those involving music and interactive play.

The family aims for both children to grow up with strong ties to their cultural heritage and an emphasis on early bilingual language exposure.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor should be comfortable and effective in various environments, whether at home or traveling with the family. The ideal candidate will be well-educated, energetic, and possess the resilience needed to adapt to an ever-changing schedule.

The family highly values someone who is culturally sensitive, proactive, and capable of managing a balance between both academic and experiential learning, ensuring the children thrive both intellectually and personally.

The Tutor’s primary focus will be to support the boy's educational journey, particularly after school hours and on weekends. The core language of interaction will be English, and early exposure to Japanese is also desirable. Mandarin is not mandatory but will be helpful.

The family wants both children to have early exposure to these languages while maintaining a strong focus on English language proficiency.

Both children are at critical stages in their development, filled with curiosity and an eagerness to explore. As such, the family expects the Tutor to offer more than conventional academic support. They are looking for an adaptable, nurturing, and culturally enriching individual who can engage the children actively and provide a stimulating learning environment.

The Tutor must foster a supportive atmosphere that encourages creativity, problem-solving, and cultural awareness. Music is a key part of the children’s education, and the Tutor must be comfortable incorporating regular musical activities that enhance the children’s growth.

Flexibility is vital, as the family travels frequently. The Tutor will be expected to maintain educational continuity during, adapting the curriculum to different environments. Additionally, the Tutor will assist in planning educational aspects of family vacations, ensuring that travel is an opportunity for enriching experiences.

There may be a crossover with executive assistance responsibilities, specifically related to planning and organizing during family travel.

The Tutor must be comfortable working in a collaborative environment alongside the family’s long-standing nannies and drivers, creating a cohesive support team for both children. The role demands someone who is independent, flexible, and ready to integrate into the dynamic rhythm of the family’s lifestyle, balancing structured educational activities with a sense of adventure.

Hours and Holidays

The Tutor will work primarily during after-school hours on weekdays and provide additional support on weekends. The Tutor will engage in a standard 35-hour workweek (this is an average per annum), though the exact distribution of these hours will need to accommodate the student’s travel and personal schedule.

The Tutor should expect to provide extra support during vacations and periods of extended travel to ensure consistent educational engagement for the children. This may include providing support in a variety of settings and times, depending on travel schedules and the locations the student visits.

The Tutor will be entitled to two consecutive days off per week. It is likely that the Tutor’s ‘weekend’ will not be Saturday or Sunday.

The Tutor will have a minimum of 9 weeks off per annum, at times agreed convenient to the Client. The Tutor will need to be flexible with respect to any changes in schedule, be they travel-related or otherwise and will adapt accordingly. The Client will strive to give up to two weeks’ notice of any planned alterations.

Accommodation, Travel and Miscellaneous

This role is live-out, and the Tutor will be provided with a travel stipend or access to a driver for commuting purposes. Both in Beijing, and during family travel, suitable accommodations will be arranged by the family, ensuring that the Tutor can maintain comfort and focus on educational responsibilities while away from home.

The successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position and must have been raised in a socially appropriate background. They will not only be excellent practitioners, but also good role models: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values

The Tutor must be a fit, healthy and a non-smoker – active and energetic with a love for the outdoors; the kind of person who always makes the most of their environment to enhance teaching and learning opportunities.
