The post holder will assist the registered nurse to provide basic care within an agreed range of care duties in relation to a patient or group of patient. Although care may be delegated to healthcare assistants.
The registered nurse is responsible to ensure the competency of the healthcare assistant to whom care is delegated, remains accountable to both for the care provided and for the supervision.
While the healthcare assistant will not always work under direct and immediate supervision, the task done must be within the framework of a plan of care. He/she is expected to be an effective member of the ward/ department team and contribute to the best possible use of resources.

Main duties of the job
Healthcare assistants will be required to carry out duties at the discretion of the Sister/charge Nurse
Communicate factual information to patients using reassurance, tact and sensitivity
Work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team
Assist in organisational arrangements to enable the fast flow of patients through the ward/department
Recognise and respond to emergency situations using the relevant alert system appropriately
Assist the nurse in clinical tasks by assessing patient’s condition through conducting basic tests e.g. Urine testing, blood glucose monitoring, recording of ECG
Responsibility for maintaining accurate, timely and complete records, both manually and electronically, ensuring the safety and confidentiality of information at all times, and undertaking all their work in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and statutory requirements.
