Job overview

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our outstanding Obstetric Medicine Team. The team currently consists of a leadership team involving one Obstetric Physician, lead Obstetrician and Consultant midwife with additional input provided by other Obstetric Consultants with an interest in Obstetric Medicine, sub-specialty physicians, Obstetric Anaesthetists, specialist obstetric medicine midwives, transfer services and critical care.

We are looking for an individual with the clinical skills and enthusiasm necessary to join and make a significant contribution to this team as well as to a relevant medical subspecialty area dependent upon the interests and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide expert opinions on patients with a wide range of complex obstetric medicine problems, taking independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre alongside obstetric and subspecialty physician colleagues.
  • Provide consultant-based maternal medicine input into antenatal and post-natal ward rounds- providing expert opinions on patients with a wide range of peri-partum medical complications, as expected in a tertiary unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will join the current Obstetric Medicine consultant team in the day to day running of the Maternal Medicine Centre and the North East, North Cumbria Maternal Medicine Network. This will involve providing senior clinical decision-making input to the care of women with complex medical conditions or medical conditions related to pregnancy throughout their patient journey from pre-conception care, through to antenatal, peripartum and postpartum periods.

This is likely to involve inpatient and outpatient workloads in a variety of settings such as antenatal clinics, remote regional MDTs, Delivery Suite, Maternity Day Assessment Unit as well as ward-based settings,

This role involves routine engagement and liaison with our multidisciplinary team colleagues in the 8 spoke sites of the NENC Maternal Medicine Network to ensure excellent quality of care for obstetric medicine patients regardless of their care location within the network.

Person specification

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register for a medical specialty (or within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
  • Fellow or member of the Royal College of Physicians
  • Certificate of Completion of Training in relevant medical specialty (or be within 6 months of the award of CCT by date of interview)
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD
  • Special skills training in the specialty.
  • RCP Credential in Obstetric Medicine (pre or post CCT)
  • Area of special interest that complements the skills existing within the department

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience in the specialty.
  • Evidence of a substantial commitment to obstetric medicine
  • Evidence of appropriate broad-based competence and experience in Maternal Medicine and general Medicine
  • Evidence of continued professional development in the field of maternal medicine
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality.
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems
Desirable criteria
  • Membership and attendance at national conferences in maternal medicine/obstetric medicine e.g. UK MacDonald Obstetric Medicine Society (MOMs)
  • Presentation in regional or National Maternal Medicine Conferences

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria
  • Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital
  • Effective administrative and time management skills
  • Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
  • Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities.
  • Understanding of the NHS England aspirations and service specification for the provision of the Maternal Medicine Network across NENC
Desirable criteria
  • Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
  • Evidence of leadership / project management
  • Evidence of having implemented change.
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
  • Training in clinical management

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education.

Research

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
  • Research/critical review of literature.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree.
  • Publications in the last three years as first author.
  • GCP

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in audit.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
  • Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
