Senior Clinical Fellow (SpR level) in Knee Surgery

We are looking to appoint 1 Senior Knee Fellows for start dates February 2027. The posts usually run for 12 months but occasionally 6-month slots can be accommodated. The one post works predominantly with Mr James Murray, while the other post works predominantly with Mr Andrew Porteous.

The job will include working with other members of the Bristol Knee Group. The posts will provide exposure to a wide range of knee surgery including partial and total knee replacement, revision arthroplasty and infection work, ligament and meniscal surgery, patello-femoral surgery.

Main duties of the job

We have one Senior Knee Fellow posts available to work with members of the Bristol Knee Group and based predominantly at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, North Bristol NHS Trust.

The posts will provide exposure to a wide range of knee surgery including: partial and total knee replacement, revision arthroplasty and infection work, ligament and meniscal surgery, patello-femoral surgery.

The successful candidates are usually post-CCT and wanting to provide a consultant practice that focusses predominantly on knee surgery. It is expected that the fellow will complete a research project during the time in the department.

The one post works predominantly with Mr James Murray, while the other post works predominantly with Mr Andrew Porteous.

There are usually 3 Senior Knee Fellows in the department. Some flexibility in programmes allows exposure to other members of the Bristol Knee Group.

Prior experience in knee arthroplasty and arthroscopy is essential for this post. The post will provide exposure to both soft-tissue, arthroscopic and arthroplasty knee surgery.

Candidates must have, or be eligible for, GMC registration that allows them to work in posts that are not recognised for training. If in a training post this post is recognised for off programme training. Successful candidates will undergo training appraisal and assessment.

It is desirable that candidates have experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or an equivalent system.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To elicit an accurate and clear history in specialist knee surgery.

To examine the knee systematically and accurately in both the soft tissue and arthroplasty setting.

Wide exposure to all techniques of knee surgery with progression from assisting to operating depending on skills displayed,

Must publish one paper per 6 months

Must progress a current research project and develop a new project.

North Bristol NHS Trust will not pay any interview expenses in connection with this post.

Qualifications & Registrations

Essential criteria
  • FRCS (ORTH) or equivalent
  • Maintain full registration with the GMC
Desirable criteria
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS)

Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of six years postgraduate experience including four years as an orthopaedic trainee in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of upper limb conditions.
Desirable criteria
  • Some training in Upper Limb surgery

Further Training, Mgnt, Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career
  • Experience in audit projects and written up
Desirable criteria
  • Upper limb audits
