More detail about the role The Orthopaedic Therapy service is under one team which provides the following: Elective surgery. The team is involved in Enhanced recovery, with the majority of OT intervention during the pre-operative stage.
Patients that have more complex needs may have additional assessments along the clinical pathway. The Trust has a new designed ward for Orthopaedic elective surgery. Trauma. North Devon District Hospital is one of the four Trauma units which is part of the Peninsula Trauma Network that covers Devon and Cornwall.
The Adult Major Trauma Centre is at Derriford Hospital (Plymouth). The Occupational Therapy Service is part of a wider established Multidisciplinary team. Orthopaedic Supported Discharge Team (OSD). The OSD team work across Acute and Community with a specific focus on patients with a femoral fracture and poly trauma patients depending on the injury severity.
The National hip data base demonstrates that on average over the last year , 82 % of patients have returned to their original residence and 95% of patients have prompt mobilisation after surgery. The team progress with the patients rehabilitation goals following discharge.
The Orthopaedic team sits within the Acute Inpatient Therapy team alongside the other sub teams of Surgical (Critical care, Surgery, Paediatrics), Respiratory, and Medical Rehabilitation services (Frailty, Gastroenterology). You will be required to ensure delivery of high quality patient centred care measured by clinical effectiveness, patient safety and patient experience in line with national guidance.
You will be expected to work as an autonomous practitioner, be up to date with evidence-based practice and be able to offer advanced assessment and treatment skills of patients. The post holder will be expected to provide an education programme for Occupational Therapy staff , to enable staff to maintain competencies and the develop depth of knowledge.
You will be responsible for ensuring excellence with in the team by initiating and participating in evidence-based projects and audit, to improve both immediate and future quality of care. About you: Are you able to provide advanced support and advice to staff on discharge options.
Demonstrate advanced clinical specialist skills in order to provide highest standard of evidence based, patient centred care. Supervise and teach staff working in own specialist field. Lead on clinical audit and participate in research. Training and development and Career Progression The trust is keen to support staff to develop strong leadership and clinical skills through clinical supervision, internal and external continuing professional developments.
There is a requirement of this post holder to show evidence of post graduate study e.g MSC module or equivalent. We are continuing to develop links with Universities to support staff with training and development. Innovation is central to therapies at the Royal Devon, demonstrated by the implementation of several new initiatives and the development of non-traditional roles in recent years including a Research and Innovation Lead.
The Orthopaedic Therapy team has been actively involved in supporting patients to be discharged to their original residence using the Orthopaedic supported discharge team, pre assessments for elective surgery to support early discharges and use of hydrotherapy as a treatment option.
