The Research and Development Department is looking for a full time Paediatric Research Nurse to enhance the delivery of clinical research to ensure the delivery of the Trust research strategy. In order to co-ordinate various studies that the Trust undertakes you will need to be a self-motivated and passionate clinically-experienced paediatric nurse, with a keen interest in clinical research.

You will be part of a dynamic team helping to support the delivery of high quality NIHR portfolio research.

PLEASE NOTE: For this post, previous and current experience of NIHR and commercial research studies is desirable as the post holder will be running several on-going, complex Paediatric studies.

Main duties of the job

On a daily basis you will be responsible for all aspects of the research process including: assessing patient suitability for trials; screening and recruiting patients; obtaining informed consent, performing study procedures and managing study data.

The key elements of our R&D strategy include: to increase the number of UK CRN portfolio studies, increase patient participation in clinical studies and ensure that studies recruit to time and target.

You will work under the management of the Lead Research Nurse & Delivery Manager, will need to have excellent organisational skills. It is also essential that you can plan and prioritise your workload in order to meet performance targets and deadlines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The aim of the role of the Band 6 Paediatric Research Nurse is to enhance the overall delivery of clinical research within the Trust by providing support to the existing research team, by assisting with clinical and administrative activities related to clinical trials, from initiation to termination, in accordance with ICH Good Clinical Practice guidelines.

The post holder will assist with the set-up, maintenance, and close down of clinical studies, in accordance with local, national and international legislation within various clinical areas. The post will entail assessing patients’ suitability, ensuring informed consent is obtained; coordinating the logistics for patient visits and undertaking patient assessments in accordance with study protocol.

All data will be recorded, including adverse and serious adverse events, in accordance with ICH-GCP. It will be the post holder’s responsibility to ensure studies are delivered in line with agreed targets.

The post holder will also be expected to ensure that all research safeguards the psychological and physical well-being of the patient in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, to facilitate high standards of care. The post holder will work across the three clinical divisions of the Trust, in a variety of areas dependent on demand.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (Child)
  • Post registration qualification relevant to area of specialty or equivalent experience
  • Teaching / mentorship qualification
  • First degree (BSc/BA)
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree or working towards
  • Diploma in Higher Education

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post reg. experience at Band 6 level
  • Wide variety of practical clinical experience, preferably both ward and clinic based.
  • Experience of teaching and supporting learners / new staff etc.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working on and supporting clinical trials
  • Experience of clinical supervision and leadership

Skills and knowledge

  • Proven clinical knowledge linked to area of specialty, and excellence in care delivery
  • Proven knowledge of safety issues through clinical governance and risk management
  • Excellent communication skills with patients, relatives, staff and external contacts, including in challenging situations, demonstrating respect and kindness.
  • Knowledge of current challenging and issues in nursing
  • Experience of data collection for quality monitoring / audit
