Clinical Teaching Fellow – Surgery / Urology

12 month post starting August 2026

This 12 month post* is an excellent opportunity for candidates to work as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Medical Education whilst gaining clinical experience in urology. All training will take place at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. (*There may be an option to extent the contract subject to service requirements and mutual agreement)

The teaching fellow posts include a fully funded place on the PGCert in Health Education at University of Reading

The Royal Berkshire Hospital hosts students from University of Oxford, University of Southampton and Brunel Medical School, in addition to Physician Associate students from University of Reading. The CTF roles posts have been established to enhance the teaching of students and maintain the Royal Berkshire Hospital’s reputation as a centre of excellence for medical education

The successful applicant must have a license to practice from the GMC, and ideally completed core training and hold MRCS. Applicants with at least 2 years NHS post-graduate experience and a strong interest in medical education will be considered

40% of the post holder’s time will be spent on teaching activities with the remaining 60% of time spent doing clinical work, including relevant on call rota

All teaching fellows will have access to a tutor who will provide mentorship with educational projects as well as an educational supervisor.

Main duties of the job

Undergraduate Teaching

The post will be tailored to the successful applicant and their specific interests and the roles could include any of the following

Responsibility for facilitating the medical attachments and placements of medical students

Production of teaching resources and delivery of formal teaching sessions

Helping develop and adapt existing teaching models and courses for medical students

Taking on a leadership and mentorship role for medical students and providing a forum to give feedback and help develop and enhance their learning and well being

Engage in quality improving projects and developing potential teaching courses

Bedside teaching including demonstration of clinical signs and examination

Procedural skills teaching

Coordinating student timetabling

Contribute to running and developing simulation sessions

Assisting the Undergraduate Managers in delivering key medical student inductions

Contributing to University activities including student examination question writing and piloting

We encourage development of teaching skills and publication of work and projects. Previous teaching fellows have successfully presented work at national and international meetings

Collaboration and shared teaching opportunities for different groups of students is encouraged and organising postgraduate sessions will also be welcomed by the department. There may also be opportunities to attend training workshops provided by Brunel and Southampton University.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

General Surgery/ Urology

The clinical part of this post will be based in the Urology department. The Urology department at Royal Berkshire has 10 Consultants and consistently receives excellent feedback from trainees in the department and the majority go on to receive a number in national selection.

The department has a specialist robotic programme for Uro-oncology, and also offers specialist andrology, paediatric and endourology services for the wider local population. The department has a strong education and research background, having been both nominated for and won awards.

The candidate would take part in 60% on call duties, in addition they would have opportunity to gain confidence with flexible cystoscopy, local anaesthetic prostate biopsies, lithotripsy and core surgical procedures.

The Candidate would be supported by a supervising consultant and would be expected to be involved in medical student teaching as well as PA teaching and within the multidisciplinary team. Teaching would be for the general surgery syllabus in addition to the Urology syllabus.

Having passed the MRCS would be a requirement for the post. There are opportunities to expand simulation and teaching practical surgical skills.

  • MRCS (or MCEM / MRCP) or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad Medical Experience
  • Previous experience of working within the NHS (2 years)
Desirable criteria
  • Minimum of six months experience in Urology
  • Post registration experience of working in other specialties relevant to Urology

Ability and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good basic and wide-ranging knowledge of clinical medicine and surgery
  • Good communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to teach and enthuse other medical staff
