The Governance team, including the Legal Services Department, plays a key role in supporting our clinical staff in the Trust’s ambition to be an outstanding provider of healthcare and a great place to work.

Working closely with our colleagues in Quality and Governance, and Patient Experience and Assurance, an exciting role has been developed to support the ambitions of the Trust’s Legal Executive and the Associate Director of Quality. The post-holder will assist in providing effective, efficient claims handling within the Trust and strengthening the Trust’s relationship with the local Coroner’s office.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work with the Legal Services team to provide direct line-management support for day-to-day claims handling issues, along with deputising for the Trust’s Legal Executive. Additional responsibilities include ensuring claims and inquests are dealt with in a professional & efficient manner and matters are escalated appropriately.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role will require close liaison with clinical, medical and other healthcare professionals, medical records staff, NHS Resolution, the Trust’s solicitors and HM Coroner, as so you will need to demonstrate an understanding of the relevant legal frameworks and an ability to provide the appropriate pastoral support for staff involved with the claims and/or inquest processes.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with NHS claims and/or coronial matters.
  • Excellent General knowledge of clinical/medical terminology.
  • Experience of working under pressure, meeting deadlines and ability to manage own workload.
  • Experience of managing a large workload at a senior level without supervision.
  • Experience of working with databases and interpretation of data and report writing.
  • Proven ability to work to tight deadlines.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of quality management processes and quality improvement mechanisms.
  • Experience of using hospital administration and patient information Systems.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as part of a team and organise fluctuating workload around competing priorities.
  • Willing to develop own skills and knowledge and work under own initiative.
  • Strong problem solving ability and capacity to recognise alternative solutions where necessary.
  • Ability to interpret national policy and guidance, identify local implications and apply implementation to a local setting.

  • Able to act as a resource for other members of the team and the wider Trust in claims and coronial matters.
  • Has the ability to prepare written material presenting complex matters in a logical way using the appropriate style, content and language for the audience.
  • Accurate, organised and detailed orientated.
  • Management level experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Clear understanding of the General Data Protection Regulations.
  • Teaching and presentation skills.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of the Civil Procedure Rules and Court processes.
  • Extensive knowledge of NHS Resolution protocols.
  • Experience of analysing information, identifying trends and exploring options to address issues.
  • Proven report writing skills.
  • Good understanding of the principals of investigation management, root cause techniques.
  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an NHS Claims Department.
  • An understanding of how an Acute Hospital Trust works and general knowledge of Clinical/ medical terminology with an ability to navigate medical records.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to LLB or equivalent working knowledge in claims, advisory and/or coronial enquiries.
Desirable criteria
  • Legal professional qualification at post graduate level.
