SENIOR FOOT & ANKLE FELLOWSHIP
(FULL TIME)
We wish to appoint a Senior Fellow in Foot and Ankle Surgery to commence in February 2026. This post is based in the Brunel Building at Southmead Hospital which opened in May 2014. The post holder will be required to work flexibly within the department.
The post holder will be involved in a busy foot and ankle service within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at North Bristol NHS Trust. The post holder will be responsible to Mr Harries, Mr Hepple, Mr Dahill & Mr Robinson, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons.They will be expected to have some previous experience in foot and ankle surgery. They will be expected to participate in the ongoing research and audit programmes of the department. They should be at the stage of a senior trainee – post exam – or immediate post CSST.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be responsible for the day to day medical and surgical care of orthopaedic day case and inpatients and will have opportunity to assist in theatres for both routine and specialist orthopaedic cases. Successful candidates will be expected to get involved in and contribute towards the department audit programme and on-going research programmes.
As part of a consultant led team you will see a wide range of cases.

Orthopaedic services including elective procedures are provided at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre (AOC) at the Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital. The AOC provides the main elective orthopaedic service for Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire and also hosts inpatient surgery for University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Healthcare Trust.Five theatres run all days 5 days a week with 28 consultants operating here. The local catchment population is approximately 500,000 but specialist services are also offered more widely across the region. The foot and ankle service covers all aspects of foot and ankle care and accepts tertiary referrals from a wide region.
Candidates must have, or be eligible for, GMC registration that allows them to work in posts that are not recognised for training. If in a training post this post is recognised for off programme training. Successful candidates will undergo training, appraisal and assessment.It is desirable that candidates have experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent.

Qualifications & Registration
Essential criteria- MB BS
- Maintain Full registration with the GMC, with a license to practice.
- MRCS or working towards a MRCS or equivalent
Training/Experience
Essential criteria- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
- Completed pre-registration year (or equivalent outside the UK).
- Not more than 3 years’ experience as a SHO.
- Evidence of training progression
- ATLS
- Evidence of Postgraduate activities
- Previous experience in Orthopaedics. At least 6 months experience at SHO level.
- Interest in perusing Surgical or A&E career.
Management & Audit
Essential criteria- Evidence of understanding and application of knowledge of specialty
- Willing to seek help from senior colleagues as appropriate.
Research/Teaching
Essential criteria- Competent in history taking and examination skills.
- Able to produce clear and concise notes
- Basic Surgical Skills Course
- Demonstrates an interest in academic enquiry.
- Demonstrates experience in teaching under-graduates and post-graduates demonstrates cases.
Personal Requirements
Essential criteria- Good written communication skills.
- Ability to fulfil all the duties of the post, including on-call commitments.
- Fluent in the English Language
- Good oral and written presentation skills

Qualification and Registration
Essential criteria- FRCS (ORTH) or equivalent
- Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).
Training & Experience
Essential criteria- To have trained in an environment equivalent to UK training.
- Minimum of six years postgraduate experience including four years as an orthopaedic trainee in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
- Training in diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle conditions.
- Some training in foot and ankle surgery
Management and Audit
Essential criteria- Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
