Job overview
We are looking to welcome a consultant anaesthetist join our team of just over 100 consultants and a similar number of resident doctors at Imperial College Hospital NHS Trust, working across all our sites and based at Charing Cross, Hammersmith, St Mary’s and the Western Eye Hospitals.
The successful applicants will be joining a welcoming and friendly department that has held ACSA Accreditation since 2024 and will provide clinical services in anaesthesia, perioperative care, theatres and pre-operative assessment clinics as part of a team-based approach.An on call commitment exists as part of these jobs.
The service also has a robust Portfolio pathway in place to support a strong recruitment programme.
The role can be cross site and job plans can be amended based on successful candidate’s areas of interest.
Applicants must be on the Specialist Register with a CCT in Anaesthesia, or within 6 months of gaining a CCT by interview date.
Please note that interviews will be held on the 7^th of February 2025 and will be a face to face AAC.
Main duties of the job
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is a busy teaching hospital, major Trauma centre and regional/national referral centre for several surgical specialties, including neurosurgery, head and neck cancer, airway surgery, plastic surgery, cardiac surgery, ophthalmic surgery, major urology and complex colorectal surgery.In addition we have one of the busiest mechanical thrombectomy for stroke services in the UK.
This post is for a substantive consultant anaesthetist capable of delivering high quality anaesthesia. The post holder will be expected to participate in the on-call rota.
The job is 10 PA per week for a whole-time contract – 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA, with scope to change this ratio as more SPA activity is taken on.- 5 PA per week of clinical activities including – pre-operative assessment clinics, elective and emergency theatre work, peri-operative medicine including acute pain and MDT meetings and on-call activity. Work will mostly be spread over the five weekdays, but can include weekend or evening work.
- 5 PA per week of Supporting Professional Activities - including audit, clinical governance, teaching, research, educational supervision of junior staff and CPD.
The post holder’s work may be cross site job or may be a single site based. The on-call aspect of the job will be single site.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are looking for outstanding anaesthetists with significant experience in our major sub-specialties including Trauma, Maternity, neuro-anaesthesia, urology, major robotic surgery, regional anaesthesia, orthopaedics, colorectal surgery, perioperative medicine, and head and neck/airway anaesthesia.
The successful applicant will become part of our busy but exciting department. The workload demands a flexibile and responsive service to both emergency and elective work within the operating theatre environment, emergency department and in remote sites including MRI, CT and interventional radiology.
In addition to a broad range of both elective and emergency clinical work, the post-holder will have ample opportunity to be involved in research, teaching and training, governance and leadership opportunities, as well as QI projects.

Qualifications
Essential criteria- GMC registered Medical Practitioner
- Minimum 6 months experience in Anesthesia in the UK
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent.
- GMC specialist registration or within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC’s specialist register
Knowledge/ Skills
Essential criteria- Comprehensive training and experience in anaesthesia
- IT Skills and computer literacy
Leadership/ Management Skills
Essential criteria- Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
