Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to lead a shift safely and effectively, deputise and take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of or as delegated by the senior sister/unit co-ordinator. The post holder will provide clinical supervision to other members of staff, students and may undertake research and clinical audits in the unit.
As a senior member of staff, you will be expected to support and supervise staff and students in the department and act as a role model for others. You will be expected to uphold high standards of care and maintain a safe and effective service in line with the NMC Code and the Trust values
To provide safe, high-quality care to patients in the perioperative environment: admitting patients pre-operatively, communicating closely with the theatre team, recovering patients (post-PACU), and safely discharging patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised patient care through appropriate frameworks, including safe effective arrangements for nurse-led discharge, underpinned by Trust values.
- To be competent in managing emergency situations.
- Have sound knowledge of the perioperative environment and the needs of surgical patients pre and post-operatively.
- Ensure the service continually improves to meet the needs of patients.
- Assist members of the team in the co-ordination of the clinical activities.
- Use clinical standards to participate in the process of monitoring the quality of care delivered. Act to ensure that nursing practice is of the highest standard, in line with Trust and CQC standards.
- Supply and/or administer medication safely in line with Trust medicines policy.
- Assist with the evaluation of care and initiate any action required, for example liaising with the multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
- Review the effectiveness of the nursing care provided and initiate any action that may be required.
- Investigate and report accidents, incidents and losses and provide initial support for the member of staff or patient involved, in line with Trust policy.
- Take on extra duties/responsibilities as delegated and agreed by the department/ ward manager or senior staff nurse, within their capability / limitations

- Report all complaints, incidents or accidents to the Nurse in charge and take appropriate action.

Management and leadership:
- Manage a group of patients, in line with level of experience.
- Lead a clinical shift safely and effectively and be a role model to all staff members.
- Supervise under the direction of the Sister/Charge Nurse, the work of unqualified staff.
- Have an understanding of HR policies and procedures.
- Manage the ward/department in the absence of the Band 7 nurses.
- Demonstrate effective time management and prioritisation of workload.
- Take an active role in the induction and orientation of new staff.
- Take responsibility for the teaching and education of pre and post registration students acting as a preceptor or mentor as appropriate.
- Demonstrate leadership and teaching skills in the supervision development and feedback of junior staff.
- Demonstrate procedures and supervise junior staff and students in the practice of new skills.
- Have an awareness of cost implications and assist in the management of resources within the clinical area e.g. equipment, supplies.
