Main duties of the job

A great opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Therapist (either Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist) to work within the area of Hand Therapy and Rheumatology in the out-patient therapy setting. This post offers a great chance for a motivated individual to develop within this field.

There is an excellent in-service set up including monthly supervision with a senior member of staff and monthly team training.

Within the role you will be expected to supervise junior members of staff and students from surrounding Universities, for which training is provided.

The successful candidate will join a team of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, a Senior Therapy Assistant and work alongside the multidisciplinary team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Specialised, experienced practitioner employed to assess and treat a caseload of patients who require Hand Therapy, rehabilitation and splinting, including Plastic Surgery, Rheumatology, Trauma and Orthopaedics and GP patients
  • To participate in the planning, co-ordinating and delivery of the Hand Therapy Service
  • To supervise, educate and assess the performance of more junior/rotational staff within the specialty
  • To be a Practice Educator, supervising and assessing Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy students on placement
  • The post holder will participate in quality and audit activity and management of clinical role
  • Deputising for the Team Lead when required

Person specification

Qualification and Professional

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registration with HCPC
  • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including recent attendance at relevant post-graduate courses
Desirable criteria
  • BAOT
  • Involvement /membership in Special Interest Group

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 18 months to 2 years post-graduate experience
  • Previous experience in specialist clinical area
  • Band 5 rotational experience
  • Involvement in audit
  • Supervisory experience
  • Contribution to clinical education of less experienced staff
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Acute NHS experience

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Importance in application of clinical governance in clinical area
  • Highly developed physical skills including dexterity, coordination & sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including an ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive and contentious information
  • Able to prioritise and organise own workload
  • Able to cope with a range of complex options, find solutions, analyse, compare and decide on appropriate course of action
  • Able to work as part of an multi-disciplinary team
  • IT skills – computer literate in email, Word & PowerPoint
