Job overview

We are keen to attract a proactive and enthusiastic Community Paediatric consultant who will enjoy working within our team within a new post to expand the team. The role will cover the Mansfield/Ashfield/Newark/Ollerton region dependent on clinical need.

This post has no out of hours commitment.

Additional duties may include safeguarding, teaching, SEND and appraisal/supervision with opportunities to be involved in and develop skills in leadership, research and clinical governance.

Applicants must have clinical experience in a broad range of general community paediatric problems including developmental and behaviour problems and experience of assessment for autism spectrum disorder/ADHD and have experience in assessment and management of children with neuro-disabling conditions.

We are well supported by our administrative team. Whilst the job timetable is Mon to Fri 9am to 5pm we are flexible with start/finish of non-clinic time, allow some working from home and are developing a clinical service to meet the needs of the patients e.g. later afternoon/evening clinic.

Main duties of the job

Key Tasks
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients
  • To share knowledge with the Paediatrics Department.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
  • Develop community paediatrics role and service development.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview. Note: CESR applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application
  • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • While the law does not require a CCT in CCH (Community Child Health), the CSAC recommends that all consultant posts should require it, as this shows the applicant is fully trained for independent practice in CCH. If they do not have a CCT in CCH, the applicant must be able to show how they have acquired the Level 3 competencies and if the candidate has a CCT in General Paediatrics, proof of appropriate competencies and experience to fulfil the duties of the post.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree, e.g. MSc, MD, PhD in Paediatrics
  • Completed fellowship programme
  • DCH, DCCH, MBA or other relevant diplomas

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan
  • Able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training
  • Broad experience of all clinical aspects of community child health including neuro-disability
  • Experience of childhood behaviour problems recognition and assessment
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training – detailed knowledge of all aspects of Child Protection work, with awareness of National Policies and Guidance
  • Looked After children – knowledge of national policy, strategy, and the legal framework relating to looked after children including the adoption process
  • Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including senior trainees
Desirable criteria
  • Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme
  • Attendance at Train the trainers Course in Paediatrics
  • Experience working in NHS
  • Wider experience, research, and training eg SPIN, in providing subspecialty service (if applicable)

Management & Administrative experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
  • Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
  • Understanding of management issues including medical management, clinical governance, service planning, and quality improvement
Desirable criteria
  • The potential to develop management and leadership skills
  • Evidence of motivational skills

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role

Research

Essential criteria
  • Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals

Other

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project, understanding the role of these in improving the medical practice
  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence, to improve clinical outcomes

  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels
