Junior Product Designer
Who we are
We are Big Potato, a multi-award winning independent board game company from East London. We specialise in super-simple, family-friendly party games. Our golden rule is "easy to learn and quick to play with no boring bits in-between".
The Game Development team are excited to announce that we're looking for our newest recruit: a Junior Product Designer with a passion for games. If you have a knack for turning fun ideas into real-world "things" and want to help us create products that brighten up someone's Friday night, then this could be the role for you.
Who you are
As our new Junior Product Designer, you will be mainly responsible for designing innovative centrepieces, along with various other physical components for our games. Think of these centrepieces as the "heart" of our games — their job is to capture people's attention and add a unique twist to the rules of our party games.
As part of the Game Development team, your key responsibilities will include:
- Board Game Design: Participating in initial game design briefs, bringing your own creative ideas to the table before reviewing with the wider game development team.
- Turning Concepts into Prototypes: Taking products from concept stage to 3D prototypes, using Fusion360 (and other CAD tools) to create functional prototypes from both plastic and alternative materials.
- Design Thinking: Coming up with fresh concepts in answer to a problem, before building in-house and re-iterating to answer testing feedback along the way.
- Testing & Iteration: Testing prototypes, identifying potential problems and iterating on designs to create the best possible player experience.
- Presenting ideas to the wider team: Providing concept sketches to convey ideas effectively.
- Industry Research: Keeping a close eye on industry trends and competitor activities to ensure our games remain innovative and engaging as ever.
Requirements
Essential Skills- A 2:1 degree or higher in Product Design, Industrial Design, Engineering or a related field.
- Fluency in Fusion360 and CAD design – proficiency in other tools like SolidWorks, Blender or Rhino is a big plus.
- Experience using 3D printing tools, specifically a Bambu X1C.
- A strong portfolio showcasing your ability to take products from concept to prototype, with a focus on creativity and functionality.
- Brilliant sketching and visualisation skills to communicate ideas clearly and effectively.
- A passion for games — ideally, someone who often plays board games at home with friends and family.
- An imaginative approach to product design with a desire to create products that leave a lasting impression on users.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome design challenges.
- Excellent communication skills — able to articulate ideas clearly and visually. Able to collaborate with a team and confidently represent your projects.
- A proactive, go-getter attitude with a willingness to get stuck in and take ownership of your work.
- Previous experience (internships or projects) in toy & game design, or creating interactive physical products.
- Knowledge of additional design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (for visual design), Keyshot (for rendering), or Rhino (for complex 3D modelling).
- General familiarity with manufacturing processes and alternative, eco-friendly materials.
We’re proud to be a team that values diverse backgrounds and perspectives. However, for this role, we’re only able to consider candidates who have the right to work in the UK.
