Skills & Experience:
Qualified barrister, Solicitor or FILEX (able to obtain or has a current practising certificate)Knowledge and experience in Environmental Health, Licensing, Waste Management and Health and Safety Law
Working knowledge of the law and practice relating to property, conveyancing, licensing, waste and health and safety
Sound working knowledge of local government law and practice.
Experience in practice as a qualified solicitor or barrister
Experience of dealing with the public.
Excellent computer skills, to include Microsoft office packages
Good communication skills, both oral and written to include presentation of complex and contentious issues to a wide and varied audience
What's involved with this role: As a Litigation and Contracts Solicitor, you will work within the Legal Services Team, ensuring excellent service to both internal and external customers. You will provide high-quality legal support to the Council, managing a diverse and complex caseload related to litigation and contract matters.
Key responsibilities:
Manage a broad caseload, providing advice on Contracts, Environmental Health, Licensing, Waste Management, and Health and Safety matters.Handle contentious legal matters, including the instruction of Counsel where necessary.
Undertake advocacy for the Council in various proceedings, including Magistrates Court, County Court, High Court, planning inquiries, and tribunals.
Advise internal service units, draft documents, notices, and orders, and respond to public enquiries.
Provide legal counsel to Council Members and address officer and public complaints.
Attend evening meetings, including committee meetings and pre-meets, reviewing draft reports and overseeing work arising from these.
Support the Council’s owned subsidiary companies with commercial property, planning, employment, and Landlord and Tenant matters, ensuring Directors understand their legal obligations and assisting with board meeting preparations and legal documentation.
