Key responsibilities of the post:

  1. To have responsibility for ensuring a commitment to provide a high quality of Diabetes & Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine Services to patients by continual development of practice in the light of evidence-base, and Clinical standards
  2. To provide advice to colleagues in other specialities on diabetes and endocrinological problems.
  3. To provide a comprehensive outpatient service for Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine
  4. To provide support for community diabetes team and primary care
  5. To provide high quality inpatient diabetes service in collaboration with other colleagues and Diabetes Specialist Nurses
  6. To support teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students and postgraduate medical education.
  7. Educational and clinical supervision of trainees of the department along with other colleagues
  8. To support and encourage audit and research
  9. To actively participate in CME and personal development plans
  10. To participate in acute medical on calls (currently 1:19) and provide weekend morning ward rounds on a 1:4 basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This Locum Consultant post is based on 10 Programmed Activities per week and is to provide consultancy cover for a 12 month period. Additional Programmed Activities may be available subject to service needs, e.g. participation on the General Medical on-call rota.

The successful candidate will work in collaboration with Consultant Physicians, Consultant Endocrinologists, the Diabetes Specialist Team and Primary Care Professionals to provide quality services for people with Diabetes.

The proposed job plan splits the workload into a “hot week” and “speciality weeks”. A final job plan will be agreed following discussion with the successful candidate and the Clinical Director but examples of what the speciality week & hot week will look like are:-

Hot week: 1 of 4

During this week the Consultant will be responsible for in-patients (12 patients) on the

ward 15, doing daily ward rounds, outliers and seeing ward referrals Monday - Friday.

A Consultant ward round will also be done on a Saturday morning reviewing new transferred patients, potential discharges and any sick patients. The Consultant will also provide clinical supervision for trainees and Diabetes Specialist Nurses.

The Consultant has only one clinic in the afternoon during this week.

Hot week 2 of 4

During this week the Consultant will provide daily morning ward rounds (16 patients) and undertake two clinics in the afternoon.

Specialty week 3 and 4

During this week the Consultant will have no inpatient commitments but will have specialty Diabetes and Endocrine clinics and time for Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs).

Personal Circumstances

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and Licensable to Practice
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to travel throughout the borough during the working day.
  • Appropiate Immigration Status

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Evidence of Specialist Training and experience in Diabetes & Endocrinology at middle and/or Consultant level (or equivalent)
  • • Possession of competencies required to undertake Consultant role in Diabetes & Endocrinology & General Internal Medicine
  • • Experience in delivery of joint care such as antenatal diabetes care or with community diabetes clinic

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of conducting clinical audit
  • • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making

Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff/students and other disciplines
  • An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
  • Research experience and publications in peer reviewed journals
Desirable criteria
  • Previous teaching experience

  • Basic Medical Degree
  • FRCEM or CESR (or equivalent)
  • Completion of Higher Specialist Training (or equivalent) in Emergency Medicine
