Salary: £20.27 - £25.47 per hour

Our client, a local government organisation, is seeking a skilled and experienced Principal Lawyer to join their team. This organisation provides a wide range of services and works closely with residents, businesses, and visitors to the Borough.

Responsibilities:
- Managing a team of lawyers and providing expertise and guidance on local government law, including civil and criminal litigation, regulatory matters, housing law, and corporate governance.
- Handling a caseload of legal work and acting as a subject expert.
- Supporting strategic projects and ensuring a solutions-focused approach.
- Carrying out advocacy when necessary.
- Attending meetings and providing legal and governance advice.
- Producing reports for council meetings and decision-making processes.
- Working occasional evenings, weekends, and public holidays to meet service requirements.
Essential (Knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience):
- Extensive experience in local government law, specifically in civil litigation, housing law, and corporate governance.
- Knowledge of the workings of local government and the challenges facing the sector.
- Practising certificate as a solicitor, barrister, or chartered legal executive.
- Strong people management skills, including motivation, performance, and capability.
- Leadership experience within a Shared Service environment.
- Ability to deliver service improvements and drive transformational change.
Desirable (Knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience):
- Knowledge and experience in areas such as procurement and contracts, planning, and development.
- Understanding of the financial, legal, and political context of local government.
Technologies:
- Proficient in the use of legal software and technology, Microsoft packages, and competent use of a computer.
