Locum Consultant Surgical Liaison Physician | Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
The post is based at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. This is a locum maternity cover post from Jan-August 2025. The post is suitable for any consultant physician with a special interest in surgical liaison or perioperative care.
The post-holder will sit within a well-established team of surgical liaison physicians, who currently provide embedded medical care for orthopaedic, vascular, general surgery, major trauma, and acute neurosurgery patients. It will focus on providing optimum medical co-management for acute cranial and spinal neurosurgical patients within ICHT, throughout the patient pathway.In addition, it involves facilitating and supervising the commencement of rehabilitation in the acute and subacute setting.
The role will involve providing high quality, coordinated, patient centred medical care for individuals of all ages diagnosed with acquired brain and spinal cord (traumatic and non traumatic) pathologies, including those with additional needs (eg.mental health, polytrauma). The postholder shares cross cover with the major trauma surgical liaison consultant when on leave or on acute medical rotation.

The post holder will work with and lead multiprofessional and multidisciplinary teams. This will include assisting with diagnosis and management of acutely unwell patients, and assisting the neurosurgical, intensive care, and other teams at SMH to assess and manage neurosurgical and trauma patients along the whole patient pathway, including assisting with prognostication, establishing suitability for rehabilitation, optimising co-morbidities, and assisting with expectation management and ceilings of care discussions.
The role will also complement the already-established COMPASS clinic (comprehensive assessment for surgery) to help provide a holistic medical opinion regarding proposed operations. This will include forming management plans to facilitate surgery (ie.prehabilitation and optimisation), avoiding perioperative complications, and optimising recovery.
