Full time post (9 PA) as consultant in paediatric rheumatology and chronic pain is available now at the Oxford University Hospitals based at theNuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Oxford Children’s Hospital.This will be a 6 month fixed term contract.

This is a locum post for sickness cover for 6 months. The post will join the current consultant team of Paediatric Rheumatology consultants, Dr Akhila Kavirayani and Dr Pam Dawson and a well-established clinical team working in the key areas of Paediatric Rheumatology and Chronic Pain.

This appointment is on a full-time basis.

Applications are invited to apply for the above post for the Department of Paediatric Rheumatology at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

This is a locum post for sickness cover for an existing consultant. The post-holder will join a well-established multidisciplinary team as a third consultant, providing a comprehensive paediatric rheumatology and chronic pain service for the Thames Valley and surrounding region.
The appointee will have the opportunity to work closely with consultants and allied professionals from the Children’s Hospital Oxford, as well as a number of other DGH’s throughout the region. There are close links with the adult rheumatology service.

The appointee will also be part of the regional Chronic Pain service providing a comprehensive out-patient and intensive day case service to young people and families from across the region and beyond.

We are looking for innovative and enthusiastic Consultants with appropriate clinical and leadership abilities. The post holder will be fully supported by a busy and friendly department and will be encouraged to take part in research and academic development.

Close links to the University of Oxford provide an excellent opportunity to develop research interests in a variety of areas.

Oxford Paediatric Adolescent Rheumatology Centre (OxPARC) is a nationally recognised specialised paediatric rheumatology service, established in 2004, providing a secondary care service for much of Thames Valley and the tertiary referral centre for Northern South Central and neighbouring areas.

The emphasis is on one-stop clinics with a full multidisciplinary team including ophthalmology.

Oxford provides a comprehensive service for chronic pain (OXCYPP) with multiprofessional out-patient assessment and in-patient rehabilitation programme.

Additional services include: a highly specialised skeletal dysplasia service offers genetic, orthopaedic and expert radiology assessment for diagnosis and management of rare skeletal dysplasias; combined rheumatology, infectious disease and immunology clinic for assessment and management of autoinflammatory conditions.

There is a strong multidisciplinary team working across all areas of the service. The service has expanded with appointment of new staff across all areas following a successful business case for 7 WTE members of staff. This post will expand the consultant team to 2.6 WTE. Members of the team are outlined below. The MDT have specific areas of interest including inflammatory disease, chronic pain and sports medicine.

There are plans to develop the Chronic Pain Service and collaborate with chronic fatigue and long COVID services.

Applications are invited from candidates with appropriate training and experience for the post of Locum Consultant in Paediatric Rheumatology at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, primarily working at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre for outpatient-based care.

Inpatient and acute care is provided with support from paediatric services at the Oxford Children’s Hospital based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. The 10 PA post advertised is long term sickness cover for the current post holder. This post will join Dr Akhila Kavirayani and Dr Pam Dawson, collectively providing 2.9 whole time equivalent consultants at this Paediatric Rheumatology and Chronic Pain tertiary centre.

Applicants should possess, or be within 6 months of receiving, a CCST in paediatrics (or equivalent) at the time of commencing the appointment and have had appropriate experience within a dedicated paediatric rheumatology unit. Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Oxford is recognised as an NHS England designated provider of tertiary paediatric rheumatology specialist services (OXPARC), established in 2004, providing a secondary care service for much of Thames Valley and the tertiary referral centre for Northern South Central and neighbouring areas.
Additional specialist services provided include a skeletal dysplasia service, sports medicine and autoinflammatory clinic. The service includes the Oxford Children and Young People’s Chronic Pain (OXCYPP) service, a regional service providing both outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation programmes for young people in pain.

This service is delivered in Central Oxford, at Douglas House, and is in high demand and ready for expansion.

Oxford has an embedded transitional service supported by an adult rheumatologist with age appropriate MDT clinics provided in both the paediatric and adult setting. This provides seamless care for adolescents and young people with rheumatic disease to adult services.
