Job Title: Learning Support Assistant (Literacy Intervention)
Line Manager: SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator)
Hours: This is a term-time position (38 weeks, excluding INSET Days), working 30 hours per week.
Salary Scale: 15 £15,382 - £15,637 (based on a full time equivalent of £22,737 - £23,114)

The Learning Support Assistant (LSA) will work under the direction of the SENDCo to provide targeted support for students, with a primary focus on improving literacy. This role will involve delivering tailored literacy interventions to small groups and individuals, as well as providing general in-class support to help students access the curriculum effectively.

The LSA will play a key role in supporting students with additional learning needs to achieve their full potential, ensuring they feel confident and supported in their learning journey.

Main Responsibilities:
  1. Literacy Intervention Support
  • Plan and deliver targeted literacy interventions to small groups or individual students, as directed by the SENDCo.
  • Support the development of students’ reading, writing, and comprehension skills through structured intervention programs.
  • Monitor and assess student progress during interventions, providing regular feedback to the SENDCo and class teachers.
  • Adapt resources and teaching materials to suit the specific needs of students, ensuring that lessons are accessible and engaging.
  1. Individual and Small Group Support
  • Work with students on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, focusing on their specific learning needs and providing tailored support.
  • Help students build confidence in their literacy and other areas of the curriculum by breaking down tasks and encouraging independent learning.
  • Assist in implementing strategies from Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) to meet individual student targets.
  1. In-Class Support
  • Provide in-class support to students with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) during lessons, working alongside the class teacher.
  • Help students to stay engaged, understand instructions, and complete tasks to the best of their ability.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment, encouraging students to participate fully in lessons.
  • Liaise with class teachers to adapt learning activities, ensuring they are accessible to all students, particularly those with literacy challenges.
  1. Record Keeping and Reporting
  • Keep accurate records of interventions, student progress, and any concerns.
  • Provide regular feedback to the SENDCo on student performance and the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Contribute to student reviews and help in updating support plans as needed.
  1. Collaboration and Communication
  • Work closely with the SENDCo, class teachers, and other members of the SEND team to ensure a cohesive approach to student support.
  • Attend relevant meetings, training, and professional development opportunities to stay up-to-date with best practices in literacy intervention and SEND support.
  • Build positive relationships with students, parents, and external agencies where appropriate, fostering open communication about student progress and needs.
  1. General Duties
  • Support students with additional needs in accessing the wider curriculum, school activities, and social opportunities.
  • Uphold the school’s values of Ambition, Respect, and Excellence in all interactions with students and staff.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during non-teaching times, including before school, break, and lunch periods, when required.
  • Carry out any other duties as reasonably requested by the SENDCo or senior leadership team to support the educational and social development of students.
