Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, flexible and motivated Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist with an interest in prevention and early intervention to join the Flying Start team in Swansea.

You will be working within a friendly and established team of SLTs and SLTAs, in partnership with the wider team of Health Visitors, Childcare Workers and Parenting Teams to support a designated population of preschool children.

You will also be part of the wider supportive Swansea Bay Paediatric Speech & Language Therapy team where there is a strong emphasis on well-being. You will have access to regular CPD opportunities, professional development activities and supervision.

Main duties of the job

This role is key in integrating the delivery of universal and targeted Speech & Language training across the FS Early Years workforce. You will deliver targeted screening, assessment and intervention to children who are identified with SLCN needs where appropriate.
You will provide Speech, Language and Communication support and advice to Parents and Childcare staff working with children with emerging ALN and SLC needs in liaison with other professionals from the multi agency team including specialist teachers and Early Years practitioners.

You will need to be innovative and creative in promoting key messages in line with WG Talk with Me campaign to wide audiences including parents and other key staff.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Recognised SLT degree or equivalent
  • Registered member of RCSLT and HCPC
  • Completion of postgraduate specialist courses, e.g. Dysphagia, etc

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Assessment and management of individuals with severe and complex disabilities
  • Experience of supervising Speech and Language Therapy students up to final year
  • Support and mentor less experienced Speech and Language Therapists within area of clinical responsibility
  • Experience and implementation of a range of specialist treatment options for individuals and groups
  • Training or teaching of SLTS, other professionals, medical staff and assistants
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and manage specialist caseload without direct supervision
  • Use and interpretation of assessments for specialist caseload

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge underpinned by current evidence-based practice
  • Good verbal and written skills to share complex and sensitive information
  • Able to work unsupervised and independently as an active member of MDT negotiating case management
  • Demonstrates understanding of wider public service policies
  • Implementation of clinical governance/audits/research within relevant specialism
  • Ability to use Microsoft packages including virtual platforms, spreadsheets etc
  • Ability to manage conflict and resolve timely using enhanced communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to speak Welsh
