Job overview

South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) is looking to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist for Eden ward in Lambeth Hospital on a 12-month fixed contract. This is to cover long-term sickness of the post holder.

The successful applicant will not only take part and co-lead a range of exciting improvement work for the ward and acute inpatient pathways, but also take an integral role alongside the other inpatient consultants and senior operational and nursing colleagues to design and realise the Lambeth Hospital Decant Programme, which is currently scheduled in 2025.

Eden ward is a Trust-wide 10 bedded male Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). It is situated in Lambeth Hospital alongside five acute inpatient wards and one inpatient rehabilitation unit.

In the Trust there are two other male PICUs with 10 beds each, and a single ten bedded female PICU for patients in general adult services, providing a total capacity of 30 male and 10 female PICU beds.

Main duties of the job

The main clinical duties are to provide senior medical input as consultant psychiatrist / Approved Clinician for the patients treated in Eden ward. There is reciprocal Approved Clinician cover including under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act for the leave, study leave and sickness of senior medical staff in Lambeth during working hours.

The post holder has an option to join the Lambeth consultant on-call rota (1:21) with a category ‘B’ 1% banding supplement.

As for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, one 0.5wte speciality doctor (to be increased to 1wte shortly) and one CT are allocated to the service and the post holder will be the Clinical Supervisor.

Alongside all the other inpatient acute wards and intensive care unit in Lambeth Hospital, the Eden ward will be relocated to the New Douglas Bennett House in Maudsley Hospital later in 2025. The successful candidate is expected to take a co-leadership role for these changes with the ward manager, inpatient leadership and Directorate Leadership Team.

Working for our organisation

The successful candidate will work in Lambeth SLaM, which is part of the the Living Well Network Alliance (LWNA), a collaboration with the local place-base of the ICB, local authorities and two voluntary sector partners (Certitude and Thames Reach).

The LWNA is the first Alliance in the country to provide whole system mental health care for working age adults with innovation, co-production and populations needs at the centre of service development and delivery.

The post holder will take advantage of all the opportunities of innovative service development, quality improvement and management / leadership development in the LWNA as well as within the Trust. There are ample opportunities for educational and academic roles and collaborations as SLaM is part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre and also the only mental health trust in the UK to have our own biomedical research centre, hosted jointly with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at KCL.
