Special Educational Needs Teacher (MLD - PMLD)

We are seeking an enthusiastic and creative SEN Teacher to join our dynamic and inclusive SEN school in Bolton. The successful candidate will deliver engaging, thematic lessons that are highly interactive and activity-based, ensuring each child has the opportunity to participate, learn, and thrive in a supportive environment.

Our school caters for children with a range of complex needs, including Autism, ADHD, and MLD - PMLD. The role will focus on supporting students with significant cognitive, physical, and sensory impairments, using a variety of approaches to ensure every child is engaged and making progress.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan and deliver creative, thematic lessons that are tailored to meet the individual learning needs of students with PMLD and other complex learning difficulties. The focus will be on multisensory, practical, and experiential activities to promote engagement.
  • Use a variety of teaching approaches, including sensory-based learning, communication aids, and interactive activities, to support students' academic, social, and personal development.
  • Incorporate physical and sensory activities into the curriculum to help students with physical impairments and sensory processing difficulties engage with learning in a meaningful way.
  • Create a stimulating and safe learning environment, making use of specialist resources such as sensory rooms, outdoor spaces, and assistive technologies.
  • Work closely with support staff and the wider multidisciplinary team (e.g. , physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists) to deliver individualised learning plans and care.
  • Track and assess progress, maintaining detailed records and adjusting learning strategies to meet the evolving needs of each child.
  • Promote the development of communication skills using approaches such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Makaton, or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).
  • Encourage and support the development of life skills and independence, using everyday activities and routines to provide meaningful learning experiences.
  • Work in close partnership with families and carers to ensure that learning extends beyond the classroom, supporting students' development in all areas of life.

Ideal Candidate:
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent, with experience working with children with ASD or SEN in an educational or care setting.
  • A creative and activity-based approach to teaching, with a passion for developing thematic, multisensory lessons that keep students engaged and support their individual learning needs.
  • Experience with communication strategies such as PECS, Makaton, or AAC, and a commitment to using these methods to promote independence and communication skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills, working closely with support staff, therapists, and families to create a tailored, holistic approach to each child's learning and development.
  • A patient, nurturing, and adaptable teaching style, with the ability to manage and respond to the complex needs of students with profound learning difficulties.
  • A commitment to inclusive education, ensuring all students, regardless of their needs, can access learning in a meaningful way.
