Communication Support Worker and Interpreter

Our learners are talented individuals aged between 16 - 25years and our focus is ensuring success in their journey to Adulthood and beyond.

We are looking for an engaging and motivated person who can sign at BSL Level 3 or above, to join our team as a Communication Support Worker, who support learners with education, health & care plans (EHCP's).
  • The role will involve supporting learners in lessons as well as working with the learner and running small group intervention sessions
  • You should have a good standard of education with excellent literacy and numeracy skills
  • Classroom experience or experience of working with young deaf people will be an advantage
  • Being aware of how to help deaf students access the curriculum is essential
  • The successful candidate will be offered a place on an accredited BSL course. Support and training will be provided as necessary
  • BSL level 6 is preferred but we will consider candidates who have BSL Level 3

The position will also have responsibility for:

  • Provide signing support at an appropriate level in a range of situations. This will include working with Sign Supported English and BSL, as appropriate to the setting, task and learner preferences
  • Support the additional needs of Deaf learners impacting on learning, such as memory and cognition issues and language delay
  • Provide learning development work with Deaf learners, checking understanding and ensuring the learner has the necessary vocabulary knowledge and familiarity with concepts used in the lesson
  • Facilitate and support use of technology to support learning and communication for the Deaf
  • Support modification of handouts to ensure accessible language and using assistive visual formats

Hours of work are 8.30am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, term time only, 30 hours, with 30-minute unpaid lunch break and 30-minute break.

BSL Level 3: £17,872 - £18,774 per annum

BSL Level 6: £19,406 - £21,098 per annum
