NCTH and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust are recruiting to further develop our clinical MDT for the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health (NCTH). This is a large national service to provide transgender healthcare nationally.

The service will operate within the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Healthcare Network (NCTHnet).

This post will provide the successful candidate an opportunity to develop, or further develop, their clinical experience in the exciting and rewarding field of transgender healthcare. The successful candidate will join our internationally renowned clinical MDT and provide transgender healthcare assessments, recommendations for gender affirming medical and surgical treatments and supervision of gender affirming hormonal treatment

We are acutely aware that access to formal training in our field of practice is sadly lacking (inter)nationally. Therefore, we are committed to offering the successful, motivated candidate any clinical training required to become a ‘Lead Clinician’ in transgender healthcare.

The successful candidate will have opportunities to become an integral part of our services’ academic programme, including research opportunities and medical/clinical education. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to undertake service development activities, particularly further developing collaborative approaches to delivering transgender health with our primary care colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Consultant Psychiatrist in Transgender Healthcare in the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health Network (NCTHnet)

Applications are invited for a post for 10 PAs as a full-time Transgender Healthcare Consultant (Psychiatrist) post working in NCTHnet. This is a new post as part of the services expansion. Less than full time working and/or job shares will be considered.

The successful candidate must have the MRCPsych or equivalent and be eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or anticipate being eligible within six months of the interview.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post will be based at 12 Broad Street and will provide outpatient assessments and treatment there or remote video consultation.

The successful post-holder will be expected, with suitable training, to work as a ‘Lead Clinician’ in transgender healthcare and undertake transgender healthcare assessments, recommendations for gender affirming medical treatments, recommendations for gender affirming surgical treatments, manage a caseload, and liaise with primary care for the delivery of these treatments and also other services as required.

NCTH will provide the entirety of this training while in post with the support (if required) of the Gender Identity Healthcare course.

The post holder will have a significant exciting opportunity to provide leadership to forge and form better working with primary care in the delivery of transgender healthcare across the nation.

It is expected that the post holder will develop or continue to develop specialist knowledge in transgender healthcare and attend (if required) the Royal College of Physicians and University of London Gender Identity Healthcare course. This course will be funded through this employment.

It is anticipated that the post-holder will provide special interest or placement opportunities for medical staff in training grades. It is hoped that the post holder will provide leadership in collaboration with the educationists in NCTH to develop clinical fellowships.

The post holder will work within the multidisciplinary team to support reflective practice and learning through audit and research. The post holder will have opportunity to provide leadership and participate in the development of research within the development to further the evidence base in this area.

Other developmental aspects of the clinical role will be to maintain national links with other services and specialists within the field; develop further links with primary care.

Contractual Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months (General Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Intellectual Disability, Forensic).
Desirable criteria
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent Medical Qualification
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • Completion of RCP PGDip Gender Identity Health Practice
  • Additional clinical qualifications.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge in Speciality
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Experience of clinical working with transgender and non-binary patients
  • Experience in communication in potentially challenging circumstances
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
Desirable criteria
  • Wide range of transgender healthcare experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Experience as working as a ‘Lead Clinician’ in transgender healthcare
  • Experience in assessment in transgender health
  • Experience in recommendations for gender affirming medical treatment
  • Experience in recommendations for gender affirming surgical treatment
  • Experience in endocrinology and/or cross sex hormonal treatment
