[ref. s17203216] Manchester - Consultant Acute Oncology
All admissions are already in receipt of oncology care at the Trust. The usual route of admission is via our 24hr hotline which triages patients, outpatient clinics, chemotherapy suites and as tertiary referrals.Those who are admitted usually spend the first 24 72 hours on an acute assessment ward (staffed during the day by a consultant in Acute Medicine or General Medicine) and are then transferred to one of the base wards if their admission requires a longer stay.
The current bed base for this service is 80 beds across several wards. Senior cover for the inpatients is provided jointly between the patients Oncology Team (Consultant and Registrar), supplemented by the Hospitalist Team. The Hospitalist team is a group of colleagues with general medical, and oncology backgrounds providing senior input to the non-surgical oncology patients admitted to the Trust as above, in liaison with the patients Oncology Team.
The role of the consultant is to provide leadership and co-ordination of the junior doctors on Acute Assessment Unit, liaise with the patients oncology team, ensure the patients are appropriately assessed and managed regarding their in-patient episode, progressed without delay on their management plan and appropriately prepared for discharge to avoid unnecessary delay.
The consultant will provide daily ward rounds on AAU with attendance and contributions from the multi-disciplinary team and support with the management of patients attending the acute ambulatory unit. The successful applicant is not expected to take oncology treatment decisions which will remain the responsibility of the patients Oncology team who will support the appointee with input at registrar and consultant level as required.
Another key role of this post is to provide junior doctor supervision, education and support for their inpatient work. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The medical establishment provides two consultants within the AO department. The appointee will be based at the Christie Hospital and will provide senior input to the following areas of delivery: Acute assessment unit (AAU) Ambulatory acute care unit (AACU) The role will also contribute 1 melanoma clinic per week with associated clinical admin/DCC and ward cover and medical oncology SPA time.
The role will be responsible for: Daily consultant ward round and management of all non-surgical admissions to the acute assessment unit. Support of patients managed through the acute ambulatory unit Liaising with parent oncology teams to provide optimal patient care.Participating in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit Contribute to current research projects and establish new opportunities to expand and develop research within the team.
Revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients. Maintaining a level of continuing professional development consistent the recommendations of the Royal College and Physicians.
Contributing to the undergraduate teaching of medical students on acute oncology topics. Providing lectures for the busy postgraduate teaching programme The post holder will have access to office accommodation with computer, intranet and internet and secretarial support.
