Clinical: The post-holder will work primarily on the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) and in the Emergency General Surgery Theatres on a shift system to provide senior input to general surgical emergency and major abdominal trauma patients, both on the SEU and in the Accident and Emergency Department.
The SEU is actively developing ambulatory care in the acute surgical patient and the post-holder will be involved in leading and running this unit on a regular basis. This will be with the support of a consultant, CT grade, nursing and administrative staff.
Teaching: Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a high level teaching hospital within the world-class Shelford Group. The Shelford Group represents ten of Englands leading Academic Healthcare Organisations. The post-holder will be required to participate in, and lead, programmes for teaching medical students, training junior doctors and in the facilitation of clinical examinations.
Active participation in weekly academic meetings, lectures and journal clubs will be actively encouraged. There is the opportunity to become a member of the teaching faculty with a number of Oxford Universitys Colleges and to become part of the trusts mentorship programme.
Clinical Governance: The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, Health Authorities, and external accrediting bodies.
There is regular involvement in Morbidity and Mortality evaluation and the fellow will have ample opportunity to lead in this area. Research and Audit: The unit is actively involved in local, regional and national research programmes where it takes the lead in many areas.
There will be extensive opportunities to be involved in research and audit with the likelihood of publication. The successful applicant will be expected to be involved in the organisation of the Annual Oxford Emergency General Surgery Conference and to fully participate in the Oxford Surgical Collaborative meetings.
Personal and Professional Development: The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or Study Leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate personal development needs.
The Trust currently makes a financial contribution in support of these activities up to an agreed limit. Management: The post-holder will be required to work within the Trusts management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust.
Administrative Responsibilities: The post-holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the clinical duties outlined above and always be up to date with mandatory training as required by the Trust. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
