Product Manager (Historic Newspapers)

apartmentWonderbly placeLondon descriptionContract calendar_month

Historic Newspapers is the world’s leading publisher of newspaper history books. We sell these books, and our archival original newspapers, through our website at historic-newspapers.com. Historic Newspapers is a sister company to Wonderbly, the world’s leading publisher of personalised books and we share lots of our tech, some of our people and our lovely office in Bloomsbury, London with Wonderbly.

We’re looking for an experienced Product Manager to join our team and take ownership of the Historic Newspapers digital product and its role in driving growth over the year ahead. This is a highly collaborative role that will involve working with publishing, commercial and technology colleagues.

First and foremost this role is about steering product development and driving conversion on our customised Shopify website so we’re looking for someone with experience building on Shopify and experience working in DTC ecommerce. You’ll own the development roadmap and the relationship with our contract engineering partner and our small team of internal developers.

You need to be comfortable with all aspects of product management in a small, agile, commercially minded team and be prepared to roll your sleeves up to get things done on the website.

However, the role’s responsibilities extend beyond the Shopify site to all technical systems used to create our products. This includes the custom software we’ve built to manage our newspaper book publishing, and the tools we’ve built for managing our unique archive of over three million original newspapers.

In order to ensure you can get up to speed quickly with these products we’re looking for someone with product management experience that extends beyond Shopify.

The role reports to our Head of Product at Historic Newspapers and will be supported by other product leaders at Wonderbly. At present we imagine this role is a 3-4 day per week contract position until Q1 2026. This is the structure we have been using with our outgoing Product Manager who has been supporting our recent transformation project and migration to Shopify.

However, we are happy to discuss alternatives including permanent contracts at the interview.

The Historic Newspapers team is based between our offices in London and our warehouse in Scotland. We’d like this role to be at least one day a week in our London office with the possibility of doing up to three days a week in person if needed from time to time.

Requirements
  • Collaborative, articulate and empathetic team player - you know how to work cross functionally and are just as happy working with developers as marketing colleagues
  • Numerate and analytical - you can make your own reports and do your own research
  • Design aware - you understand the role of great design in driving product performance and are happy to sketch wireframes and provide design feedback
  • Experience managing some or all of a high quality DTC ecommerce product with £5M+ turnover
  • Experience working with Shopify, including custom development projects
  • Experience managing contract development teams
  • Experience working with in house development teams
  • Passionate about some or all of the following areas - books, publishing, newspapers and history!
