We have many years of experience supporting our Service families and we are determined to make the very best of the short time children are with us.

BFS Naples in Italy provides education for primary children from 3 – 11 years. Proudly providing education for the children of UK MOD personnel assigned to NATO.

This role is based at our British Forces School, Lago Patria, Naples, Italy

The British Forces School is part of Defence Children Services (DCS), who are a Defence delivery organisation, subordinated under Army Regional Command. Our Vision is that we Educate the Child – Support the Family – Defend the Nation. HQ DCS is UK based at Trenchard Lines, Upavon and has forward deployed staff all over the world.

DCS is responsible for the education and care of children of accompanied Service and Defence entitled personnel in 21 of MOD schools and settings, located across the globe in areas such as Cyprus, Germany, Itay, Brunei etc.

We also provide advice and guidance in respect of education for service families in the United Kingdom and the wider world.

Job Description

The role of Assistant Headteacher is a crucial part of the leadership and teaching team within BFS Naples. We are looking for a dynamic and suitably experienced individual for whom our values and ethos resonate to become Assistant Headteacher, BFS Naples. A determined individual who is committed to raising achievement and enabling pupils to recognise their potential. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Specific duties vary according to the needs of the school and currently include:
  • Leading and contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of the school’s policies, School Improvement Plan, practices and procedures, so as to support the school’s values and vision.
  • Leading on performance as a line manager for staff, ensuring that they are supported, valued and held to account for their performance.
  • Leading and co-ordinating the curriculum offer, ensuring intent, implementation and impact is consistently successful across the school.
  • Leading and participating in the monitoring and evaluation of quality of education being achieved across the school.
  • Leading and managing all aspects of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENDCo) role within school, including working with children, staff, parents and multi-agencies.
  • Provide PPA cover for staff within the school (0.4 teaching commitment) and additional teaching cover, as required.
  • Achieving all aspects of the DfE Teacher standards, modelling good practice in teaching and leading a culture where learning is celebrated and valued.
  • Coaching, mentoring and supporting staff with their professional development, ensuring that this has the desired impact.
  • As Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead, promoting the safety and wellbeing of pupils at all times ensuring that appropriate safeguarding arrangements are maintained.

This is a full-time class teacher position. Specially recruited for overseas service appointees are not expected to return to the UK.

Person Specification

The following experience, skills, and qualifications are essential criteria for the role:

  • UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and successful completion of Induction programme at the time of application.
  • Recent experience of teaching the National Curriculum for England for a minimum of 5 years and senior leadership experience (i.e. leadership of a key stage) in a UK based or DCS school.
  • Evidence of setting high expectations and proven experience of ensuring good progress and outcomes for pupils.
  • Good subject and curriculum knowledge of the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage for England.
  • Proven experience of making accurate assessments that inform planning and enable pupils to improve.
  • Proven experience of adapting teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils.
  • Demonstrate how effective behaviour management that ensures a good and safe learning environment.
  • Willing to make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school.

The following skills and experience are desirable:

  • Knowledge and understanding of supporting the needs of the children of military personnel
  • National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL)
  • Demonstrates a resilient, passionate and hardworking outlook, flexible approach and projects a professional image.
Qualifications
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and successful completion of induction.
  • Evidence of qualification will be required at interview. All qualifications declared must be held at point of application and if applicable be in date.
  • Experience of teaching in a mainstream UK school or an MOD school in a primary phase (essential).
  • Evidence of recent and relevant training or professional development applicable to the post.
