The NHS Digital Academy has an opportunity for an Exemplar Service Lead to join our product team. We’re looking for an experienced product manager and strong strategic thinker who is expert in turning user research into achievable learning outcomes.

Ideally, you’ll be an experienced DDaT professional who enjoys teaching what you know.

The Digital Academy exists to support the continued digital transformation of the NHS through education and training. Our product team is responsible for planning, creating and delivering impactful learning programmes which meet the data-informed needs of colleagues across the whole system.

We take a user-centred approach to learning product development and are looking for someone who both understands how NHS services are being digitally transformed and what skills and ways of working will help us to release more value from these services.

The Digital Academy currently offers a range of learning products about digital and data. These range from classroom-based courses to bite-sized self-directed learning online. Some of the products we design and deliver ourselves. Others are commissioned through partners.

For example, NHS Providers design and deliver our NHS Digital Boards programme and Imperial University our current Digital Health Leadership PGDip. We also recommend and signpost external training offers, where they meet our product standards.

In 2024/5 the Academy’s strategy is to focus on learning frameworks, pathways and products which:
  • support NHS staff across the system to use technology more confidently and competently
  • provide those responsible for digital upskilling (Educators) or rolling out new org-wide systems (CDIOs) with effective learning strategies and useful educational resources
  • support service teams and their SROs in releasing more value through digital
  • upskill those moving into a Digital Data and Technology role (DDaT) and support DDaT professional skills recruitment, retention and development across the system
  • encourage leaders to advocate for the culture, investments and processes which will support the next phase of digital transformation of the NHS
We anticipate our Exemplar Service Lead will take charge of the product sets to increase digital confidence across the NHS and provide system-wide support for digital educators. These two workstreams are the urgent priorities identified in our recent learning needs analysis.

The work is high-profile, complex, strategic and has many stakeholders. It represents a big chunk of our budget and needs an experienced product person to engage the team, supplier and stakeholders and get high quality educational products live at pace.

The NHS England board have set out the top-level purpose for the new organisation to lead the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services for all, which will inform the detailed design work and we will achieve this purpose by:
  • Enabling local systems and providers to improve the health of their people and patients and reduce health inequalities.
  • Making the NHS a great place to work, where our people can make a difference and achieve their potential.
  • Working collaboratively to ensure our healthcare workforce has the right knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to deliver accessible, compassionate care
  • Optimising the use of digital technology, research, and innovation
  • Delivering value for money.

If you would like to know more or require further information, please visit https://www.england.nhs.uk/.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
  • You will work with your team, internal stakeholders and external suppliers to deliver against the Academy’s prioritised product backlog.
  • You’ll be responsible for managing the research, design, testing and evaluation required to deliver measurably impactful research, framework and products which meet our NHS Digital Academy Standards.
  • You’ll share your lived experience and subject matter knowledge in educational and digital best practice with colleagues and learners both formally and informally
  • You’ll contribute to Academy communities and communications, with strong presentation and writing skills
  • You’ll help define platform and delivery strategies for educational products. This may involve delivering prototype training yourself and/or training the trainers. You’ll oversee any relevant learning content production processes, removing blockers and ensuring timely delivery.
  • You’ll develop and maintain relationships with the user groups, DDaT profession leads, stakeholders and suppliers you will need to develop and market your products.
  • You will manage relevant suppliers to get the best possible value from each taxpayer-funded contract, ensuring they meet contractual obligations and deliver against the product outcomes and milestones you have set.
  • You will line manage and develop other members of the product team, taking an active role in prioritising and assigning the product workload. You will deputise for the Head of Product in product workload meetings where required.
  • You will report regularly to Academy SLT (Directors, Head of Product, Head of Operations) providing the data and evidence they need for business cases and strategic planning.
  • You’ll use your strong written and verbal communications skills to engage Academy customers, stakeholders and supporting networks in our work. This is likely to include delivering formal presentations, designing marketing communications and drafting learner correspondence.
  • You will identify where you need upskilling and (supported by your line manager) invest time in your own professional development and wellbeing.

If you like what you have read and think you have the skills and experience, we need then don't delay, apply today! We get lots of applications for our roles and so we sometimes have to close our posts early. Don't miss out!
