We are seeking a well-qualified full-time Biology specialist with the ability to teach Chemistry up to KS4 to join a lively and forward-looking department starting in September 2025.
Biology is a popular subject in the school and achieves excellent examination results at IGCSE and A level. Almost all girls take triple award IGCSE Science in the Upper Fifth (Year 11). There are currently two Upper Sixth and two Lower Sixth groups in the discipline.The department offers additional teaching, beyond normal lesson time, to girls applying to Oxbridge or undertaking the Extended Project in the Sixth Form.
The Science Department comprises nine full-time and three part-time members of staff, supported by three laboratory technicians. There is a Head of Science, a Head of Biology, a Head of Physics and a Head of Chemistry. There are six well equipped laboratories.All laboratories have data projectors and whiteboards. The Science Department runs various science-related co-curricular clubs and organises trips, conferences and lectures throughout the year. The biology department is responsible for several co-curricular clubs including Green Fingers Club and Dissection Club while the Chemistry department is responsible for Junior Science Club and Science Journal Club.
A willingness to lead one of these clubs will be paramount.
The successful applicant will have the ability to teach Biology at all key stages. The ability to teach Chemistry to Key Stage 4 would be an advantage. All teachers offer teaching beyond lesson time to support girls in their Oxbridge applications or guide them in research for the Extended Project.Previous experience of IGCSE will be a strong recommendation. However, this vacancy is also suitable for a talented and enthusiastic ECT. Full ECT guidance and support is provided at FHS, leading to QTS at the end of a successful first year’s teaching.
